Cupcakes are everywhere these days. In NY they are on every street corner. There are whole TV shows dedicated to them, and cupcake shops are popping up like mushrooms.

Please understand that I’m not against the occasional sweet treat. They are part of life; I understand! And there are plenty of Beauty Detox treats, as well as other versions of not-so-bad treats out there (coconut ice cream, dark chocolate, etc.). But let’s be real. Cupcakes are smallish and cute, but they are by no means harmless. Even one here and there, week by week does add up, and is doing far more damage to your attempts to have great skin and a beautiful body inside and out than just a few extra calories on a splurge day. Which, by the way, isn’t actually a few… the average small cupcake has 585 calories and a whopping over 770 in large one (!!).

Let’s take a look at some of the common ingredients in cupcakes:

Bleached, enriched all-purpose flour:

Refined flour has been stripped of its nutrients in the process, leaving you with the starchy endosperm to eat, but not the other nutrients found in the germ and bran. White and wheat flours include the pesticides in your cupcake to go with it. Wheat is also one of the most heavily sprayed crops, and as if that weren’t enough, the length of time it can be stored can allow mold and fungi to grow in it and contaminate it—and your cupcake. So there’s no nutritional value in the flour to begin with, and you get toxins on the side. Gluten, too, which is found in wheat products, can cause inflammation in the intestinal tract. From the beginning, that cupcake is a recipe for stealing your Beauty Energy. Coconut, brown rice and almond flours are options if you’re making your own, though you may need to experiment with the amount of liquid you use in your recipe. Coconut flour in particular is especially absorbent (so you’ll need extra liquid) and is often used in conjunction with other types of flour rather than alone.

Eggs:

Though organic eggs are the lesser of the evils when it comes to animal products, they’re still acid-forming in the body, high in saturated fat, and take a lot of energy to digest once they are cooked and move from a liquid form to a hardened form. I guarantee they ‘aint using organic eggs at the typical cupcake store (though maybe some much more rare organic stores will). They most likely are using eggs from chickens that have been fed a poor GMO-based diet laced with antibiotics, which you will then make its way into your body. If you’re making your own desserts, you
can try using the Ener-G Egg Replacer, flax seeds, or chia seeds (one tablespoon of flax or chia seeds mixed with three tablespoons of warm water take the place of one egg).

Butter:

So much dense fat! At least this fatty dairy source doesn’t have all the casein protein found in milk and milk products, but it is the combination of so much fat with so much refined carbohydrates that is part of the reason that cupcakes are so fattening. And again, the butter is in most all accounts, not organic.

White Sugar:

Sugar, especially the refined white sugar that shows up in most cupcake mixes and recipes, is quite the thief when it comes to Beauty Energy. Even organic cane sugar is…refined sugar! It’s one of the most aging products you can put into your body, and it contributes to wrinkles, dark under-eye circles, dull hair, and inflammation. Other cupcakes may add agave, claiming it’s a “healthier” treat, but we all know the truth about agave. Some cupcakes are almost too pretty to eat—but they won’t make you pretty! Try using stevia and/or raw coconut nectar (which is low fructose/low glycemic and contains minerals and amino acids), though you may need to adjust the amount instead of using it as a 1:1 replacement for the amount of sugar a recipe calls for.

Milk:

Dairy is a no-no. It’s not natural for humans to be consuming in the first place, and is acidic, highly mucus forming and difficult to digest. If you want to know more, check out the whole sections of my books that I dedicate to it. In place of cow’s milk, you could try almond milk, hemp milk, or rice milk. Dairy is also frequently found in the frosting, so watch out for it there, too.

Cornstarch:

Like flour, cornstarch is made from the endosperm, this time from the corn kernel (and that corn is potentially genetically modified from the start). That means it’s stripped of some of its nutrients and all you’re left with, again, is the starch. GMO ingredients have their own set of health issues. It’s a highly processed ingredient, not something you’d find in nature. It’s fairly dense in calories, but hey who’s counting now, when the average tiny cupcake is ringing in around 585 calories (and 770 for a large) anyway! In some recipes, you may be able to substitute almond flour or arrowroot powder.

Artificial coloring:

Those red velvet cupcakes may look appealing at first glance, but when you think about how that cake got to be that color, you may change your mind. Food dyes come with risks like hyperactivity in children, allergy-like symptoms, and sometimes even tumors. There are natural alternatives, like beet juice or spirulina, to make your food look pretty.

Vegetable oil:

People tend to get too many omega-6 fatty acids and not enough omega-3 fatty acids, and omega-6s are found in vegetable oil. An off-balance combination of omega-3s and omega-6s can contribute to heart disease and other health and beauty issues. Many cupcakes contain large amounts of vegetable oil! In some recipes, you can use coconut oil instead of vegetable oil.

Corn syrup:

High-fructose corn syrup is ubiquitous when it comes to processed foods, and those cupcake kits and tubs of frosting generally contain it. Scientists at Princeton University conducted an experiment that involved feeding rats high-fructose corn syrup and monitoring their weight, triglycerides, and body fat levels. What they found is that the rats that consumed the high-fructose corn syrup showed even more negative effects than the rats that were fed table sugar. The rats “showed characteristic signs of a dangerous condition known in humans as the metabolic syndrome, including abnormal weight gain, significant increases in circulating triglycerides and augmented fat deposition, especially visceral fat around the belly.” Those effects could lead to diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and high blood pressure. You won’t usually find high-fructose corn syrup in grocery stores (though it’s still an ingredient in some of those packaged mixes and frostings–and far too many other things to count), but some recipes call for corn syrup, which you can get almost anywhere. In some cases, you may be able to substitute honey or maple syrup.

It’s Not Just the Ingredients—Cupcakes Don’t Combine Foods Properly

When it comes to Beauty Food Pairing, cupcakes are a digestive disaster. They combine protein from eggs and dairy with refined starches from the flour and cornstarch, and through a ton of dense from from oil or butter, or both on top of all of that. So in one “harmless” (not!) little cupcake, your energy is being sucked up, as it creates skin-damaging inflammation in your body, and toxicity that continues to amass, due to really poor ingredients. Ever wonder why you feel tired and bloated after eating one? Or if you are a regular eater- why your skin looks patchy, dull or blemished? There isn’t anything good about them…cupcakes should be avoided.

What If You Need a Sweet?

There are ways around some of the hazardous cupcake ingredients if you’re making them yourself, especially if you feel comfortable whipping up treats in the kitchen and bake frequently. However, getting a cupcake recipe you love right using the potential substitutions could be a long, frustrating, and expensive trial-and-error process, especially if you’re trying to make completely “clean” cupcakes rather than substituting for an ingredient or two. If you’re just experiencing a craving for something sweet, you can make a dessert that contains Beauty Foods that will boost—not drain—your Beauty Energy, like:

Raw Chocolate Ginger Cake with Cacao Frosting, which incorporates Beauty Fats like avocado, Beauty Nuts like almonds and walnuts, and healthier sweetener options like coconut nectar or maple syrup.

Raw Pecan Love Pie, which again incorporates nuts, fruits (like raisins and coconut, two of the best Beauty Fruits), and is sweetened with coconut nectar or maple syrup.

Thyroid Boosting Coconut Macaroons, which are incredibly yummy and call for coconut oil, organic cacao, and coconut flakes.

Raw Cacao Truffles, which use several of the same ingredients as the macaroons. The macaroons and the truffles need to be frozen for a few hours or overnight, so as soon as that sneaky little craving starts to show up, get to the kitchen and whip up a batch of one or the other!

Dark chocolate, when you’re out or on the go. You can keep one in your purse or car to avoid succumbing to a (dangerous) cupcake craving. Choose organic when possible.

You won’t even be tempted to reach for the cupcakes, these treats are so good. And if you’re in charge of taking desserts to a party, make one of these instead of cupcakes and know that you’re making your friends and family eat Beauty Foods that have some ingredients that are beneficial- and not harmful to their health.

I hear it all the time: claims that you can’t eat healthy on a budget. Well, It’s just not true. You may have to plan things out a bit more, but the extra time is worth it. You can nourish your family with the best foods if you know where to look and what to buy. You don’t have to buy all organic produce or feel like you can only shop at high end grocery stores to make a difference in your lifestyle. Compare a pound of quinoa at around $3.99 that makes several meals, versus one fast food meal that costs at least $5.00. Plan, and you can save and be healthy.

Here are some easy tips to keep a healthy diet, no matter what your budget is:

Buy in Bulk

You can buy produce and Beauty Food staples in bulk at stores like Costco, and that can save you a surprising amount of money. You can purchase raw nuts, seeds, grains, spices, and condiments and then store them in airtight containers in your pantry so you’re always stocked up. They even have great produce items, like big bags of organic spinach or carrots.

If you can set aside one day per week to make your Glowing Green Smoothies and prepare (and in some cases, freeze) your meals, you won’t have to worry about the produce going bad, so you’ll be saving time and money.

(Tip: You can freeze your Glowing Green Smoothies and move one from freezer to fridge each night so you have one ready to go first thing in the morning. Just give it a stir in the morning!)

Stores Like Trader Joe’s and Aldi

While you won’t be buying in bulk and you may not be buying all organic produce in these stores, you can save money when you bypass the premade foods (especially at Trader Joe’s) and go straight for the fresh, natural ingredients. TJ’s has great lemons, avocados, organic romaine hearts and more. At Aldi stores, you can sometimes find produce at a fraction of the cost you would in other grocery stores. Just keep the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen in mind as you shop (you may want to make a list so you don’t forget what’s on each list!) so you can put more money to buying organic for the “dirty” produce items, which have more pesticides.

The Dirty Dozen

If you can’t go completely organic, do as much good as you can by purchasing as much organic food on the Dirty Dozen list as possible. EWG’s list of the Dirty Dozen includes the produce you should do your best- given your budget- to buy organic because of the amount of pesticides sprayed on them (if budget is a serious issue and you can’t get these organic either, soak for at least half an hour with veggie wash and water, or diluted raw apple cider vinegar).

Spinach

Lettuce

Apples

Celery

Sweet bell peppers

Potatoes

Peaches

Nectarines

Strawberries

Pears

Grapes

Cherries

There’s also a list of the Clean Fifteen, which you don’t necessarily need to purchase organic:

Avocados

Onions

Cabbage

Sweet peas

Eggplant

Domestic cantaloupe

Kiwi

Asparagus

Mango

Pineapple

Sweet corn

Watermelon

Sweet potatoes

Grapefruit

Mushrooms

By just following this list, you can cut down on up to 80 percent of your pesticide consumption. If you’re buying produce that you’ll be removing the outer peel from anyway, you can usually get away without buying organic. However, the nutritional content may not be as high in conventionally grown produce as it is in organic.

Scout Out the Sales and Plan Your Shopping List Accordingly

Planning ahead can allow you to save money on your grocery bill, too. Apps like Food on the Table and PushPins let you enter the grocery stores you typically visit and they’ll alert you to any sales. Be sure to check weekly ad circulars to get a good idea of what’s on sale when you start planning your meals.

You may not find produce on the list very often, but you could stock up on Beauty Grains, for example, or other items that you tend to buy when you’re grocery shopping, like toothpaste and toilet paper. Every little bit of savings counts, right? Being aware of the current and upcoming sales will show you where you should shop this week for the greatest savings and may even inspire you to be creative with your Beauty Detox-friendly meal planning.

Shopping for what’s in season will also save you money, with no need for coupons or special ads. Don’t be afraid to make changes to your Beauty Detox Recipes based on what’s in season.

Make Your Food Last

If you hate buying produce only to find that it’s gone bad before you’ve had a chance to enjoy it, employ a few techniques to keep your food fresh as long as possible. There’s a fabulous collection of tips on Buzzfeed, like how to keep onions for up to eight months when you store them in pantyhose, and how to make your bananas last longer by wrapping the top of the bunch in plastic wrap.

Some of my favorite storage tips include:

Store your sweet potatoes, garlic, and onions in a dark, cool place.

Delicate greens and celery should be eaten within a few days. Keep them in a bag until it’s time to wash them, then wash them in cold water. You can do the same with other Beauty Greens, like kale, but the heartier varieties will last a little longer in the refrigerator before you get around to eating them.

These tips won’t necessarily save you money on your grocery trip unless you’re shopping the sales and buy more than you need even if you don’t know what you’ll do with it yet, but they may prevent you from needing to return to the store to re-purchase ingredients that went bad in your refrigerator or on the counter.

Beauty Detox Recipes that Don’t Cost a Fortune to Make

I’ve shared several recipes here and in Beauty Detox Foods that are nutritious, affordable, and taste amazing. Here are a few of my favorites—and they don’t cost much more than $5 per person to make, if that:

Ananda Burrito

Raw Taco Mexican Salad Meal

Raw Red Pepper and Tomato Soup

In fact, most of the Beauty Detox recipes are relatively inexpensive to make once you have a well-stocked spice cabinet and pantry with all the basics.

The Beauty Detox Plant-Based Diet Is Less Expensive Than One that Involves Meat

Just by skipping over the pre-packaged foods where you pay extra for the convenience of having to do less of the cooking and prep work, you’ll find that you’re saving a lot of money. If you’re following the Beauty Detox plan and avoiding meat, you’ll spend less overall because a plant-based diet is so much cheaper than one that features an animal protein at just about every meal. Cook up some sweet potatoes or millet and make a huge salad at the beginning of the week, and pull from it for a few days so you aren’t in a huge bind and tired after work and end up buying more food out.

Be disciplined on Sundays or at least one day during the week to make some things- and you will end up saving a lot of moola and eat better. And feel much better, I might add!

Grow Your Own Foods and Herbs

You may be surprised just how easy it is to grow some foods—or in the very least, herbs—in your home. Try growing basil, cilantro, or rosemary by your kitchen window. Ha! you might say, how can I do that? While we’re all really busy, these are things that honestly won’t take up much of your time. You can buy plants in the grocery store that will pay for themselves several times over. As for more substantial foods, start a container garden on your balcony or deck if you have the space, and you can grow tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, carrots, and more. Some people line up mason jars on their walls inside and grow a variety of herbs there.

There’s nothing fresher than produce picked off of your own plants right before they go into your meals. It will cost a bit more upfront to purchase the container, the soil, and the seeds, but as long as you plan ahead and take good care of the plants, you’ll be able to save money in the long run. You can have your own little mini-garden of Beauty Foods in no time, and there’s something so satisfying about pulling your next meal off of plants you cared for with your own hands.

Learn How to Make the Most of Your Produce

Get creative and invent new ways to use the parts of the plants you might not normally use. For example, try something with lemon zest if you bought organic lemons for your daily hot water with lemon or your Glowing Green Smoothies. Find new ways to use almond pulp after you’ve made almond milk (try dehydrating it and making crackers!). When you use your produce in new ways, you’re spending less on other products, like crackers.

Community Supported Agriculture Groups and Farmers’ Markets

With community supported agriculture groups, you make monthly payments and get weekly boxes of fresh produce from farms during harvest times and growing seasons. You get to build a relationship with the farmer, save money, and the mix of fruits and vegetables you get in your box each week will inspire you to be creative in the meals you cook. You’ll get a variety of Beauty Foods in the freshest possible state, right off the farm without days of travel time between the farm and your table.

If you eat eggs, you may be able to get fresh eggs—eggs that haven’t been bathed in chlorine like the ones at the grocery store have—through a CSA group.

There is a slight risk involved for everyone who participates, though: if the crops do poorly for some reason, you don’t get your money back. If the crops are abundant, you’ll have a nice box of beautiful produce each week. Everyone’s in it together no matter what the outcome.

Farmers’ markets are a great way to get fresh, local produce for less. To find local farmers’ markets and CSAs, visit LocalHarvest.org. They’re usually held once per week in the same location. There’s less risk involved than there is with a CSA. You simply find your nearest market, head over, and purchase what you think looks good. You’ll get to know the farmers, ask them questions about their farming practices, and have exposure to new vegetables and fruits this way, too.

Try these tips, save, and live the best life you can, which includes a clean, healthy diet. You deserve it!

I’m so happy to be able to share Leticia’s story with all of you, as our very first featured Beauty Detox Transformation story! We’re going to be featuring these community transformation stories here on a monthly basis, so we can continue to inspire each other as a community…and cheer each other on. If you have one you’d like to share, please email us at transformation@kimberlysnyder.net.

Leticia, a Patient Care Coordinator from Virginia, was able to drop 65 lbs of baby weight and clear her skin up by following the Beauty Detox philosophy. Read her inspiring story below:

How long have you been following the Beauty Detox philosophy? Was it easy to incorporate it into your lifestyle?

I started with the launch of Beauty Detox Solution, which was an easy transition into my lifestyle because I was ready to do something about my digestion problems. As soon as I read the “light to heavy” approach it, changed my life! I found the book really easy to understand and follow and I relate to her because being from another country, I had an idea of other natural foods, but just didn’t know how to introduce them into my life. Kimberly has so many ideas and easy to follow programs.

What is your daily regimen? Give us an example of a typical meal plan and exercise routines.

Today I had a glass of water, warm water with juice of half a lemon, breakfast:banana buckwheat smoothie with chia seeds, mid-morning:rolled oats with 1/2 an avocado, some almond milk, 2tbs hemps seeds and 1tbs flaxseed meal. For lunch(as I’m typing!) huge lettuce salad with tomatoes, carrots, radishes, red cabbage with raw apple cider vinegar, tahini, and almond butter dressing (it’s so big, this is all I’m having for lunch!) Dinner will be Raw Gorilla Taco Wraps from Beauty Detox Foods. I also alternate Pilates and body pump workouts.

How do you feel after adopting the Beauty Detox lifestyle? What changes have you experienced?

I feel a million times better; after years of struggling with digestion problems I finally found a long term solution that helps me lose weight and feel/look better. Just the fact that I don’t want coffee anymore amazes me! I don’t break out anymore, I don’t even need lotion, my skin is just perfect, not dry and not oily. My hair is thick and I also started getting white hair during my last pregnancy (when I’m pregnant I crave deli sandwiches,it’s horrible) and now it’s all gone!

How has this impacted your outlook on life?

I’m just a happier person now that I don’t have to worry about my “colon health” if I can put it that way. Now that I’m not all “backed up” anymore, I feel happy and free. I have energy to do things, and I smile more. I tell everybody about the Beauty Detox lifestyle and it makes me feel great that I can inspire others.

What words of encouragement do you have for others in the Beauty Detox Community?

I think that the most important thing is to be realistic and know that the step you are taking is for a better and healthier you. The feeling of empowerment when you look back at those pictures and you see this amazing new you is worth every craving for unhealthy choices you might have.

What helped me the most was to set realistic goals. I gained 65lbs during my last pregnancy, and after having the baby I wanted to lose 35 more lbs, but it was hard and I kept repeating to myself “35 lbs.” Until one day I told myself I will do 5lbs at a time, and that’s when I started losing the weight. Small steps, small victories, and… now, the baby is 10 months, I lost 65lbs, I feel and look better than when I was 20 and I’m HAPPY. Plan your meals, be prepared and don’t give up!

I just got back from an incredible and super fun trip to London and Paris that I wanted to share with you. Take a few minutes to live the trip with me!

What was so special about the trip for me was that the last few times I’ve been to London, it has been to support clients on movie press tours as their nutritionist. But this trip was actually about my own stuff- and getting to talk about my philosophy and work and books. What an honor and a dream to be discussing it across the pond!!

Above, I had a meeting with my whole publishing office over there, to explain the philosophy to them firsthand. I love them all, and they all got to try the Glowing Green Smoothie, many of them for the first time! I so appreciate their support over there.

d

Yes, they still have these classic phone booths. Tally ho!

During the press tour, we had drivers to take us to all the different interviews and appointments all over London. So we got to see so much the whole time, which was a real blessing.

Here are some pics from a public demo of the Glowing Green Smoothie and
short discussion I gave in Sloane Square.

Then on to doing radio shows!

Walking around Soho to editor and journalist meetings there at The Century Club. Oh and by the way, did I mention every day we were in London it was sunny and warm?!!

And in between meetings we drove by Buckingham Palace. Ok, that doesn’t happen in LA or NY. Here I am, just passing by a huge palace between interviews, laa di daa!

Below, here I am with the absolutely lovely and spirited Lisa, who is part of the marketing team that works with my publisher. We are having lunch in a bright little corner of Covent Gardens between appointments. I got a big huge green salad and a dairy-free potato and leek soup.

More radio…and video interviews!

I love the ubiquitous “Underground” signs. I also love how it’s referred to as the “tube”, but people pronounce it as “chuube”!

What else was I eating? Well one night we found this amazing vegetarian Indian restaurant. I got a lentil and potato dosa, and shared daal and some aloo gobi (potato and cauliflower) with rice. I always take my digestive enzymes with me. I am really strict with no dairy no matter what, no matter where I am, but when traveling I will be more lax about things like white rice, which I wouldn’t eat at home very often.

I also found lots of quinoa! It is invading London I think. Two different restaurants had it- and I asked them to toss it with greens to make me enormous (as you can see!) quinoa-greens salad. Beet salads, non-dairy veggie curries, hummus were all easy to find everywhere as well.

Ok so when you’re in London you have to go to some pubs. How can you not? It’s part of the local culture! As you know, I am not a huge beer drinker, but when I was there I did indulge in my favorite beer, which was on draft- Guinness! I do admit I love the taste. We had a blast, and I definitely don’t worry about some treats here and there. As long as you follow the big picture most of the time, you can enjoy your life too, and those treats won’t set you back.

At Press Association, like the version of the US’s, “Associated Press” for interviews.

Harrod’s at night. Spectacular! London I love you so much!!

But now on to…Paris!

Is there anything better than Paris on a sunny day?

Yes! A sunny day NOT in the peak of the tourist season, as we were lucky enough to find ourselves in. I couldn’t have created a better time to be there.

Starting the day with a leisurely day sitting at an outdoor cafe, chilling and people watching, which is one of the prime activities in Paris. I think it’s absolutely great! What’s with all the rushing around us Americans always do all day?? I think we could all really learn from these European practices, especially just going to the cafe.

Crepes all around… but for me, a huge salad with haricots verts (green beans), beets and avocado. Yummy!

I’ve never seen the Louvre be so…uncrowded. Ah, magnifique, being outside in the amazing weather surrounded by centuries’ old vaults of some of the world’s best artwork!

I could not help but visit this chocolate shop we found, L’Atelier Du Chocolate, where I met the owner and chocalatier herself (imagine if you made chocolate treats for a living!). I explained we wanted dark chocolate “sans lait” (no milk) and she led us to her bins of the most amazing, dark chocolates ever.

I absolutely love the “green back” book sellers, which line the banks of the Seine. I could spend hours sorting through the old books and goodies (and I did!).

Okay here is what we ate for dinner one night. Yes, at a leisurely outdoor cafe- my favorite way of dining! I WILL indulge in some gluten here and again, especially when I am traveling. I just take digestive enzymes and don’t worry about it. It’s not like I eat it every day…and I was in Paris!

Here, I started with a big green salad. And then shared spaghetti puttanesca (with no anchovy), and a cheese-less pizza with tons of veggies and topped with raw arugula. Oh yes, and a delicious red wine. Hmm, hmm!!

Here I am, a little sleepy-eyed after waking up from a nap on the lawns at the base of the Eiffel Tower. It was like waking up…and still being in the dream!

I hope you enjoyed taking the journey with me. I hope you are inspired to see that A) Our community is growing worldwide, and we are all connected and stronger by it! B) You can follow Beauty Detox principles no matter where you are, and still enjoy your life. Pick and choose the most important things that are in your control (always start with green salad, no dairy, take digestive enzymes along with you, avoid heavy oily salad dressing, etc.). Guinness and spaghetti are not things you have to give up forever…just don’t eat them every week! And enjoy when you do.

I have made dozens of versions of this super easy “burrito” and in fact, it is a usual lunch food for me, after a green salad. It is tasty, and instead of using a refined white flour tortilla, you can prepare this using a nori wrapper, which has so many beautifying minerals OR a gluten free tortilla (brown rice, teff, organic corn even), if you want something that feels more substantial.

And just like the Raw Taco Mexican Salad, this recipe is super easy and really affordable; it breaks down to only $1.67 per burrito! And so fast to make- under 5 minutes for sure. How many meals can you say costs less than that?! Well ones that are made of whole, healthy foods- not fake junky stuff.

This is also a great recipe for those who like to pack their lunches. Simply pack up the filling and bring the nori wrappers or tortilla separate, and assemble there.

Dressing:

1 Tbs. organic Dijon mustard = $0.35

1 tsp. fresh lemon juice = $0.10

½ tsp. nutritional yeast = $0.31

Black pepper to taste

Celtic or Himalayan sea salt, to taste (optional)

Base Mixture:

1 cup of diced celery (about 2 long stalks) = $0.75

1/3 cup diced white onion = $0.25

1/3 cup chopped parsley = $0.50

1 avocado = $2

Untoasted nori wrappers (available at a health market or online) = $0.60 OR gluten-free brown rice or teff tortillas, or organic corn tortillas (often in the refrigerated section of health stores) ( 1 = $0.75 )

Optional add-ons:

Handful of baby spinach or a few kale leaves

A few Tbs. of Probiotic & Enzyme Salad

Sprouts

Instructions:

Mix the dressing of the mustard, lemon juice and nutritional yeast together in a medium bowl and sit to the side.

Dice the onion, celery and parsley, and add to the dressing bowl. Mix everything together very well. Season with black pepper and a little bit of sea salt (optional) to suit your taste.

Cut an avocado lengthwise and remove pit. Scoop out the flesh and cut in lengthwise strips.

Lay a nori wrapper or the tortilla flat on a plate, and lay some avocado strips right down the center (the long way), avoiding a few inches from the top and bottom. Next spoon some of the mixture from the bowl on top of the avocado strips. Top with any add-ons you like. Wrap up as you would a burrito, by folding the bottom end up then wrapping the sides towards the middle. Hold in your hands so all the folds are held securely in place. Beginners- or anyone really!- should definitely eat over a plate! Enjoy and experiment to find your own favorite combinations. And share with us what you invented!

The food industry has a lot of dirty little secrets they don’t want you to know. Terminology that sounds straightforward, like “natural”, sounds so happy and clean but may not really mean much at all.

Let’s just dive right in and examine what “they” don’t want us to know!

1. Your Extra Virgin Olive Oil Isn’t What It Claims to Be

Olive oil isn’t a Beauty Food despite the common idea that there are several health benefits to consuming it. Olive oil (or any oil) isn’t found in nature, it’s processed. So I don’t recommend more than just an occasional splash on a salad or cooking at low temperatures.

An interesting article in The New Yorker points out that just because the bottle says you’re getting extra virgin olive oil, that doesn’t make it true. In some cases, extra virgin olive oil is cut with oils of inferior quality (sometimes olive oil, but sometimes other vegetable oils). The FDA says it doesn’t have the resources to test it. Who is looking out for us then? We are left, truly, to fend for ourselves and our own health. The article recommends purchasing your oil directly from the miller, if possible, so you can see it being made.

Instead of cooking with olive oil of questionable quality or sprinkling it onto your salads, get the fats you need from Beauty Fats, like coconut oil, avocados, nuts, and seeds or even whole olives. Don’t think that by replacing olive oil with vegetable oils, thinking that since the word “vegetable” is in the name, it must be good. Polyunsaturated fats like canola, corn, cottonseed grapeseed, safflower, soybean, and sunflower oxidize easily and aren’t whole foods either.

2. Artificial Coloring Lurks in Unexpected Places and Causes Hyperactivity in Kids

Artificial coloring serves one major purpose: to deceive the consumer. It makes not such great looking stuff look prettier. It makes otherwise bland-looking cereals irresistible to kids. Maybe you steer clear of those sugary cereals and the obvious candy and punch that you know contain dyes (um, Captain Crunch?!). But specially created dyes are in lots of other foods too- like added to food pellets to give farmed salmon a fresher, heathier pink look, while Yellow 5 even makes Mt. Olive and Vlassic jarred pickles look more appealing. Bread, too, often contains caramel coloring simply to look darker.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest warns that Red 40, Yellow 5, and six others contribute to “hyperactivity in children, cancer (in animal studies), and allergic reactions.” When you shop for whole, organic foods either in the supermarket or the farmer’s market, you’re seeing an array of natural beauty, and that feeds your Beauty Energy better than anything pumped full of dyes to look pretty ever could.

3. Free-Range, Cage-Free, and Natural Don’t Mean Much

Free-range may conjure up images of poultry being allowed to roam around in a large area outside, enjoying a nice life. Sadly, that’s not the case at all. It just means that they have (some) access to the outdoors. That doesn’t specify what has to be out there (like grass), how long they’re allowed outside, or the amount of space they’ll have to roam around in.

Cage-free simply means they poultry isn’t kept in cages. Again, this doesn’t mean they’re living a blissful life in wide-open spaces. The Huffington Post points out that this doesn’t even necessarily mean the chickens are allowed outside. They still may be barely able to move around. They’re simply not in cages.

Add those inhumane practices to the fact that poultry is often pumped full of salt to preserve the meat and make leaner cuts juicier, and the additives like medications, antibiotics, heavy metals, and even Prozac, caffeine, and banned antibiotics (did you know your chicken was depressed?) and you’re eating quite an unfriendly, toxic concoction every time you dig into non-organic poultry.

“Natural” is such a loose, generic term now that it doesn’t really mean a thing…though it does sound comforting. According to an excerpt from Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation at PBS.org, “a natural flavor is not necessarily healthier or purer than an artificial one.” The article goes on to explain that some ingredients are labeled as “artificial” simply because of the way they’re derived, while something considered “natural” can contain cyanide from the use of peach and apricot pits. So in essence, “natural” should be taken with a (large) grain of salt.

4. Your Breakfast Cereal Isn’t as Healthy as You Think

Whole grains are good for you, but not everything that makes the “whole grain” claim is safe. It is not only the amount of sugar and oil that can be added to cereals to make them more appealing, but that the extrusion process itself, used to puff up certain types, can alter the proteins inside the grains and turn them into neurotoxins. Eat Beauty Grains that haven’t been put through the extrusion process. I love oat groats and steel-cut oats (Irish oatmeal), and my Raw Rolled Oat Cereal recipe is a quick, delicious breakfast alternative to boxed cereals. You can cook your oatmeal, too, of course, but just steer clear of those packets of instant oatmeal with lots of extra sugar, salt, and other additives.

5. Artificial Sweeteners Make You Fat

Different research has shown that using aspartame, saccharine, and acesulfame potassium, and other artificial sweeteners can lead to more weight gain than the sugar you’re trying to avoid. It confuses your body when you feed it something sweet with no calories to go along with it; that leads to more cravings.

So is eating refined sugar okay? No. It will cause wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, weight gain, and cause constipation. It steals your Beauty Energy and disrupts your body’s ability to consume nutrients and use enzymes. There are plenty of naturally sweet fruits to consume once your body has been cleaned. If you really need to add sweeteners to your food, I recommend small amounts of raw coconut nectar, raw honey (from a bee keeper that uses ethical practices) maple syrup, or stevia. And agave is also big no-no!!

6. Calorie Counts Are Often Wrong

According to the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the calorie counts in pre-packaged and restaurant food are not exactly accurate. According to fast food meals averaged 18 percent more calories than stated, while frozen meals from the supermarket averaged eight percent more than their nutrition facts labels claimed. Some restaurant meals actually had up to 245% more of the estimated calories.

Good thing Beauty Detox isn’t about calorie counting in the first place. It’s so much simpler to prepare and eat Beauty Dishes at home because it frees you from hidden calories and the need to count calories at all. You’ll still lose weight, but your mind will be more focused on enjoying the colorful, beautifying foods in front of you than staying caught up in the numbers. But even if you do count, you’ll be far better off and have a much more accurate idea if you limit pre-packaged foods and stick to whole foods.

7. The Main Thing the Food Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know

The main thing the food industry doesn’t want you to know is that they don’t care about you. They care about their bottom line- not your health. Period. They will omit details and use buzzwords to draw consumers in. Labels saying “more protein’ or “reduced fat’ can still have increased amounts of refined flour and sugar, more preservatives, etc.

Generic, catchy phrases like “higher in protein”, “low-fat”, “no sugar added”, “whole grains”, and “heart-healthy” aren’t always as straightforward as they appear, and the food has often been strategically manipulated in other ways—mostly with salt, sugar, and fat as well as preservatives, so that it still tastes good enough to get you hooked. If you’re eating pre-packaged, processed foods without combing through the ingredients lists first, you could be falling victim to marketing tactics.

The truth is, you’re almost never going to find Beauty Foods in the center aisles of the store, with the exception of some seeds and nuts and you’ll be healthier, more beautiful, and less stressed about shopping if you avoid those pre-packaged foods altogether. You’ll actually save money in the end, because whole foods, especially in bulk, can end up saving you more that all the pre-made stuff.

How to Get Around the Deception

The easiest way to get around most of the deception is to shop the perimeter of the store and visit farmers’ markets. Stock up on fresh, in-season, organic vegetables and fruits and skip processed, packaged items in the middle of the store. Check out our infographic to help you navigate your grocery store! Choose whole foods, and don’t let “them” aka the food industry load up your body with hidden chemicals, sugars, and other nasty ingredients that will drag down your healthy and energy.

How about a side of superbugs with that grilled chicken breast? Could that slab of meat on your plate kill you over the course of the next couple of days? Possibly. And not what you were probably bargaining for when you were trying to eat your lean protein cut.

Thanks to antibiotic misuse in animals, the very bacteria those antibiotics are supposed to kill could resist their feeble attempts. While the Beauty Detox plan doesn’t advise consuming large amounts of animal protein (yes, it’s totally possible to get all the protein you need from plant-based sources), but I know some of you still enjoy keeping some meat in your diet, so I thought it was important to share this.

Antibiotic-Resistant Superbugs Have Been Found in Meat

In February, the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) released its annual report on retail meat. The results were scary.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) analyzed the findings on samples of poultry, pork, and beef, and concluded that there were antibiotic-resistant salmonella and Campylobacter bacteria on:

81 percent of ground turkey

69 percent of pork chops

55 percent of ground beef

39 percent of chicken breasts, wings, or thighs

Salmonella and Campylobacter are no walk in the park to begin with, but in the past, antibiotics were able to get you back on your feet within a few days. But now, superbug versions of bacteria severely limit the possible medications that will make you better and could land you in the hospital for quite a while. In some cases, you may develop chronic arthritis from salmonella complications, or even die. According to EWG, Campylobacter can result in Guillan-Barre Syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that could leave you paralyzed.

In addition, the EWG report states that 53 percent of the chicken samples contained superbug versions of E.coli bacteria, which can cause severe diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, according to the Mayo Clinic. FoodSafety.gov points out that it could also cause kidney failure and death. It’s straight up scary.

Are you wriggling in your seat yet? Does that really sound like “clean” food to you? That turkey burger you were planning to have for dinner may not sound so appealing anymore. You don’t have to swear off burgers forever, though. Try the Alkaline-Grain Veggie Burger made from millet, not meat. Even my dad likes them!

Misuse of Antibiotics in Livestock

So how did these superbugs come to exist? Essentially, it boils down to the overuse (and misuse) of antibiotics in livestock. Livestock is pumped full of these antibiotics in order to promote rapid growth, maintain their health even in cramped and unsanitary conditions, and to prevent and treat diseases. According to the PEW Charitable Trusts, nearly 30 million pounds of antibiotics were sold for use on animals raised for food. Only 7.7 million pounds were used to treat sick humans. Sounds like a lot right? Well it is!

According to CNN, the FDA is attempting to collaborate with the meat industry rather than enforcing regulations for now. They’ve suggested cutting back on unnecessary antibiotic use in animals, but whether the farmers decide to do so is ultimately up to them (great!). The FDA doesn’t track how the antibiotics they purchase are actually put to use, so when you buy meat in a restaurant or a store, you won’t know what you’re getting unless you’re extremely careful.

What Can You Do to Protect Yourself?

Even if you aren’t worried about the superbugs affecting you because you use a meat thermometer to make sure your food is thoroughly cooked and you’re meticulous about washing your hands, not re-using utensils, and cleaning up when you’re done, you could still be affected. Guess where the antibiotics- along with a brew of toxins, chemicals, hormones, and even steroids- end up when you eat those meats, even if you’ve killed all the bacteria during the cooking process? Your body. So what can you do to avoid getting sick now from the bacteria, or later, when the additional toxins have had a chance to make a home in your cells?

The first, most obvious reaction–and one that I recommend as part of the Beauty Detox plan- is simply to eliminate or at least greatly cut down on your meat consumption. This will help you to not only avoid harmful bacteria, but also make your body less acidic, and ease all the Beauty Energy you have to waste on digesting meat. Digestion concerns aside, you’re still putting all the toxins those animals were fed into your body when you eat them. So even if you don’t get sick from the meat now (because your meat was thoroughly cooked and handled properly, always important), it could make you sick later, once the toxins have built up. Any of these chemicals, hormones, etc, will put a damper on your beauty and energy levels, and will also age you more quickly.

If you do still wish to eat meat, make sure you buy organic, hormone-free animal products. If you can, take it a step further and purchase from a local farm or source and don’t hesitate to ask questions about how the animals are cared for. By making this tweak to your buying habits, you’ll not only cut down on your potential exposure to superbugs, you’ll conserve Beauty Energy by not ingesting toxins, either. Check out restaurants that source such meats, if you eat out.

Another thing you can do is switch to sea animals for some of your meals that contain animal protein. While eating seafood comes with its own list of concerns and toxins, you can temporarily escape some of the issues with livestock and superbugs by occasionally having fish a few times a week, maximum. Be sure to choose fish like wild Alaskan salmon, mahi-mahi, sole, tilapia, trout, striped sea bass, haddock, halibut, and whitefish over the ones that are higher in toxins, like swordfish, tuna, shark, bluefish and Chilean sea bass.

Beauty Proteins to eat instead include:

Raw nuts and seeds

Chlorella and Spirulina, both of which are algaes that are 65 and 60 percent protein, respectively

Quinoa, one of the top Beauty Foods for building long, lean muscles

Green vegetables (Broccoli has 11.2 grams of protein per 100 calories whereas steak only has 5.4 grams!)

Legumes and beans

Rather than leaving an acidic residue in your body as meat would do, these Beauty Foods will help your body become more alkaline, which is the key to your beauty and your health.

Remember, soy and whey protein powders are not part of the Beauty Detox plan. Raw hemp protein powder and hemp seeds are much better for you and provide you with 11 grams of protein per 30-gram serving. Hemp is another one of the best Beauty Foods for a gorgeous, toned body. Sprouted raw protein powders are great also.

If you’re eating Light to Heavy each day as I recommend in the Beauty Detox plan, you’ll be eating animal protein later in the day, if at all. I don’t recommend eating it more than once per day. It’s not necessary, and limiting your intake is another way to lower your odds of consuming meat that will make you sick.

Your immune system will also be stronger if you’re following the Beauty Detox plan, so if you do get sick, your body will be able to do everything it can to make itself well again (though that is definitely not an invitation to skip seeing the doctor for a prescription and care!). The stronger your immune system, the more likely you’ll be to recover.

Alternatives to Meaty Meals

If you’re ready to let go of animal protein for good or just for more meals per week, try mixing in whole grains that are complete proteins, like quinoa, to fill you up and make the transition easier. You can also pulse nuts in your food processor until chunky to make traditionally meaty favorites, sans meat.

Some of my favorite hearty Beauty Detox meals include:

Raw Gorilla Taco Wraps

Quinoa Ten-Veggie “Fried Rice”

Rainbow Stuffed Peppers

Enjoy and be well!

It really bugs me when people thing that eating truly healthy or the Beauty Detox way means that you have to spend lots of time and/or money doing so. It’s simply not true! It’s a big misconception for those that think that, and you end up cheating yourself of eating great foods, because you reason that eating fast food or cheap food is simply easier. Sure there are some recipes that take longer…but you don’t have to make them, and certainly not on a regular basis! In contrast, there are so many easy ways to throw together easy Beauty Detox dishes, and it can end up costing less than even a meal at Subway!

For instance, this entree salad is something I made for a client today for lunch. She was shooting a magazine cover, so I wanted to give her something substantial but not bloating or overly heavy. Such shoots are very long hours, so she needed something for long-burning fuel.

I wanted to share this easy recipe with you because the total cost is $5.22 per person (recipe is for 2) and the time it took me to make was definitely under 10 minutes!

This is a tasty, quick, and super affordable salad I whip up whenever I have a craving for some mexican flavors. If you’ve made the Raw Taco Gorilla Wraps from The Beauty Detox Foods, you already know how simple this “taco meat” is, and how it tastes just like ground beef served in regular tacos! This salad uses the same taco filling atop a bed of delicious, crunchy romaine.

Ingredients:

For Salad:

1/2 avocado = $0.50

2 hearts of romaine (organic if you can source it) = $2

1 tomato, chopped = $1

1/2 red onion, chopped = $0.63

1/3 bunch cilantro, chopped = $0.50

2 Tbs lemon juice = $0.25

For Taco Filling:

2 cups walnuts = $4.00

1 Tbs. cumin = $0.87

1/2 Tbs. coriander = $0.57

2 Tbs. low sodium tamari = $0.03

1 tsp. chili powder = $0.09

Instructions:

For the taco filling: Put the walnuts in a food processor with the blade in place, and process until chunky. Scrape the ground nuts into a bowl, and mix in the cumin, coriander, chili powder, and cayenne. Add the tamari and mix again. To save time: just chop the walnuts by hand on a cutting board, and then mix the spices in, then toss in the tamari last. That way you won’t have to clean up the food processor!

Make a quick salsa by mixing the chopped tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and lemon juice.

Arrange the chopped romaine in your favorite serving bowl and spoon the taco filling on top.

Add the salsa and top off with the avocado slices, fanned out. The avocado is optional, you can leave it out and get the substantial feeling of the salad from the nut meat combined with the veggies.

Enjoy!
