12 Items in Your Fridge That You Should Throw Away Immediately

what to have in refrigeratorIf you’re like most people, your refrigerator probably harbors a few deep, dark secrets. I visit most all of my clients’ houses, and inevitably poke around in their fridge. It’s always hilarious to me how many excuses I hear them shriek out when I start looking, such as: We don’t eat that! That’s for my mother in law that comes to visit! Or, I haven’t touched that in weeks! That was before we started following your program. To which I reply, well then if you’ve committed yourself to improving your diet and lifestyle, why keep those items lurking around? That is part of the old programming. It’s time to get rid of the old stuff to make room for the new, which supports your goals.

Everything you see in your space should be supportive of your goals and reflective of how you want to live. I understand that you may share space with a spouse or someone that eats differently. Perhaps you can share with them why you think they would they would be so much better off without these items. If they are not open to change right now, maybe group the items together on one shelf, so you can separate them from the foods you are focusing on to improve your life and health, and as a natural consequence, your beauty and weight.

But the truth is, many people have health hazards hidden in plain sight on their refrigerator shelves! Oh how I love to stand in front of a new client’s fridge with a huge garbage bag, and throw out toxic item out of toxic item. Take a look in yours, and rid yourself of these 12 items, which can harm your health.

1. Dairy

dairy productsMany people believe that dairy products (milk, sour cream, cheese) play an important role in the diet because they contain calcium. But the fact is that in nature, dairy is not designed to be consumed by humans (and many ask why is my stool green?)  If you go against the laws of nature (despite dairy being a big, profitable business), various health issues can arise.  In The China Study, Dr. T. Colin Campbell found that dairy not only didn’t contribute to bone health, but that its consumption correlated with higher rates of osteoporotic fracture. This is because dairy consumption creates a state of acidity in the body. In order to neutralize this acidity, the body pulls salts from the bones, weakening them.

Likewise, a significant portion of the population poorly tolerates the sugar in dairy (lactose), and the protein found in dairy (casein). Additionally, dairy may contain rGBH, a hormone that can increase risks of certain cancers.

Instead, stock your fridge with nut milks such as unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk.

2. Non-organic eggs

non-orgaic eggsWhile I don’t personally eat eggs, I do feel that local, organic, free-range, fresh eggs are a viable protein source for people who choose to eat animal proteins. That being said, conventional eggs are often several weeks old before they reach grocery store shelves. Likewise, they may contain antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, and strains of salmonella and other bacteria.

If you do eat eggs, choose local, organic, free-range eggs from a local farm or your farmer’s market.

3. Mayonnaise

mayonnaiseMayonnaise frequently contains soybean oil, which very often comes from GMO soybeans. In fact, in the United States, about 87 percent of soybean crops are genetically modified. Genetic modification is relatively recent in human history (it came into practice in the mid-1980s), so there is little research about the long-term effects. Still, early rodent studies are worrisome, linking GM foods to sterility and infant mortality.

Just look at mayonnaise. It is gloppy and looks like cellulite. Do you want to put that in your body? Really. Think about it. Is there any doubt this high fat, clogging “food” wouldn’t make your body look gloppy as well?

Instead, opt for organic, sugar-free mustard.

4. Ketchup

ketchupKetchup contains high-fructose corn syrup, and it many contain other chemicals, as well. HFCS (which may also be called corn sugar) contains high concentrations of fructose. In the small amounts found in fruit, which also contains fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants, fructose can be processed efficiently in the human body. In large concentrations, such as in HFCS, however, fructose is very difficult for the liver to process. This results in multiple problems, including a fatty liver, high triglycerides, and disruption of the body’s normal appetite signaling system. Fructose consumption has also been linked to type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

5. Margarine and/or butter

MargarineMargarines may contain trans fats, and many contain chemicals you just don’t want in your body. Butter is high in saturated animal fat, which can damage your heart and is just pure fat. Both may contribute to excess calories you don’t need in your diet, as well as poor blood lipid profiles. Instead, cook with a small amount of coconut oil or vegetable broth.

6. Commercially prepared salad dressings

prepared salad dressingsThese dressings may contain dairy, chemicals, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and genetically modified ingredients such as soybean oil. Instead, make your own salad dressing from organic raw apple cider vinegar, a small amount of extra virgin olive oil (or skip it), and herbs/spices.

7. Deli meats

Even low-fat deli meats may contain ingredients that are hazardous to your health. In order to make them more palatable, manufacturers often inject deli meats with a salt, sugar, and chemical solution that enhances the flavors. Other chemicals may serve as preservatives and color fixatives.

Consider a hummus or avocado sandwich instead, which is far healthier than a chemical-laden deli meat sandwich. Please don’t eat chemical sandwiches!

8. Bacon and processed meats

baconProcessed meats such as bacon, sausage, and frankfurters are hazardous to your health. In fact, one study showed that processed meat consumption resulted in a 67 percent increase in the risk of pancreatic cancer.

9. Yogurt

Types of yogurtMany people operate under the belief that yogurt is the exception to the no dairy rule because it contains probiotics. While probiotics are a good thing, getting them in a dairy product is counterproductive (see dairy, above). Yogurt is still made from pasteurized dairy, it still contains lactose, high amounts of casein, and all the other dairy components.

Instead, have some Probiotic and Enzyme salad, buy raw sauerkraut, or try some coconut milk yogurt, all of which don’t have the potential health hazards of dairy consumption.

10. Tofu

tofuWhile many people consider tofu to be a healthy alternative to meat, I have grave concerns about the health of soy products. As I mentioned above, about 87 percent of soy in the United States is genetically modified. Soy is linked to a number of health problems including certain cancers, thyroid disorders, and impaired fertility.

Fermented soy products like tamari, miso and tempeh are not considered problematic as the allergenic proteins can be deactivated in the fermentation process.

I find the reason people think they have to eat soy is as a protein replacement for meat. Please read my protein discussion in The Beauty Detox Solution. You don’t have to “replace” the meat with a hunk of tofu. If you eat a whole-food, plant-based diet, you will get plenty of protein.

11. Juice

juiceJuice seems like it could be healthy, but it’s actually loaded with sugar. It is also lacking in fiber and high in calories. Because juice can spike your blood sugar, it can also cause you to have cravings and overeat. Instead, have whole, fresh fruit.

Commercial juice is also the P word- pasteurized, which destroys many natural benefits and nutrients.

12. Soda

sodaThere’s just nothing good about soda. Not only does it create an acidic metabolic state in your body, but it’s loaded with chemicals and contains HFCS (regular soda) or artificial sweeteners (diet soda). Both have been shown to cause weight problems. Skip the soda! Have water instead. Train yourself to give it up, and over time you will be okay with it not in your life.  I promise. I’ve had a diet soda intervention with many a client.

  3. These are great types and I’m thrilled that I’ve followed all of them! (While I do still have bottled salad dressing in the fridge, it has no HFCS, preservatives or anything that I wouldn’t put into my homemade dressing.)
    I do have a question about non-dairy yogurt: I’ve been unable to find any that don’t have sugar (or the equivalent). Any advice?

  4. You have to eat dairy products or have some form of calcium. Your bones will break without them. Many old people break hips and bones alot. I wonder why…It’s because the doctor told them not to eat dairy products.

This is all so variable and uniquely individualized that to make a blanket statement that everyone should throw out certain foods and replace them with ones they most likely don’t even like is absurd!! My great-grandmother ate everyone of the foods which you insist we must ALL do away with, along with red meat, pastries (dessert came first!) , and just about every fruit & vegetable I can think of. The only illness she suffered from before she passed away at the young age of 95, was a little short term memory loss and some minor arthritis. She fell while riding her bike at age 92 and fractured her right radius, her MD was so surprised that it healed at the same rate as that of someone in their 20’s! There are just WAY TOO many variables involved to simply say “don’t eat these & eat these instead and you will be healthy” it simply just isn’t that easy, if it were medical school wouldn’t be SO HARD!!! Everyone is genetically different and research is now revealing evidence regarding the human DNA, Genomes, Epigenomes, and changing how we will view health, food, and medicine much more accurately than, “throw away your cheese!”

  8. Thanks for this list! Those things are absolute favourites in my in-laws’ kitchen – they’d consider all of those absolute essentials – but you don’t really need any of them. I make my own mayo using organic, free-range eggs and a mix of extra virgin coconut and olive oils when I really want it and it tastes so much better than the store-bought stuff even when I’m lazy I can’t do it haha. I also make my own ketchup with fresh tomatoes, raw apple cider vinegar, sun dried tomatoes and a pinch of stevia. Nothing beats the taste of real food.

  9. Part of your information is somewhat incorrect. Not All Ketchup uses HFCS in the recipe. Not anymore. There are organic ketchup’s that are great and Organic Salad dressings as well.

  11. I really don’t care what you think tofu is amazing for you and people should continue to eat it, yumm. I’m having some for dinner tonight. however, I do agree with mayo. YUCK, pure oil.

    • Agreed. You have to realize, *most* tofu you buy will say that it is organic, non-GMO. All of the GMO soy primarily goes to feeding livestock, and being used in processed foods. Organic, non-GMO soy products are safe — just be sure the soy comes from the United States, rather than contributing to deforestation in the Amazon.

Hi Kimberly! im 28 years old and im usually a very thin person, when i was in my early 20’s i had eating disorders and i lost a lot of weight due to stress, at that time i went to a nutritionist and she made me a diet to gain weight, now i have a more normal weight and i dont want to loose it, but im lactose intolerant and im suspecting egg intoletant too. My mother had a very severe Reumathoid Arthitis and she is under her weight right now, i would like her to gain weight in a healthy way, and also in a way that will not cause inflammation on her body, my sister has Celiac Disease, and my father and grandmother have Diabetes. I read your book , but in my country some of the ingredients that you mention for the recipes are not in the stores here and most of the time you talk about loosing weight. Is your book and diet more focused on overweight people? and if so, what should a person who doesnt need to loose anymore weight take in consideration while reading your book and following your diet? I care about being healthy and feeling good, and not hungry or loosing more weight, and also to feel like i can eat things even if i have a certain food intolerance.

I’ve spent an hour reading all of your articles, I’m mesmerized! I Live a pretty clean lifestyle but I want to be almost perfect for when I have clients. Your website supports my goals 100%! It’s exactly what nutrition should be in my opinion! When I finally get my degree, I hope to become as accomplished as you! I want to teach people what you have taught on this site! :)

    • make sure during your studies you understand how to read research reports and be cautious with those who site research without notations. these days you can find studies especially related to nutrition and diet that sight a relationship with a disease and a food item in either direction cause or prevent. in order to be certain that the food item is the cause or prevents an unhealthy outcome, enormous repeated studies must be conducted where many other lifestyle mannerisms are ruled out.

      often people who are promoting elimination of certain foods have ulterior motives or personal agendas. almost all are a self promoters and not scientists worthy of making recommendations. epidemiological studies where many people report their daily intakes, only point to possible connections through statistical manipulations. also keep in mind people are notorious in reporting errors about their diet. please read this bolg with great caution she has not done her homework and I am troubled by her beliefs. she is igniting misinformation that your profession will have to tackle instead.

    I thought a little bit of organic butter was ok though? You mention you can use it for Blossoming Beauty in your book. I have been scraping a little bit on my gluten-free toast on the days I don’t have raw-avocado cereal.

    I guess the small amount (like a teaspoon) doesn’t hurt, right?

  18. LOL!! Some people…SMH!! What are you even doing on this website reading articles if you “know” everything and are going to continue eating foods that you THINK are still good for you!

    Dairy for one….c’mon be realistic. It’s a cow’s breast milk!! Meant for the nourishment of her calf!! Not at all meant for human consumption. Would you even allow your baby to be breastfed by another woman? Honestly, you’d think that was weird. Don’t lie to yourself. So why in the heck would you consume another species breastmilk? Really. Think about it.

    • Although I agree with what your saying, I believe your tone could be a little different. Remember were all here to learn a better way and not to get beat up when we do something we shouldn’t.

    • I dont eat wheat, dairy, sugar or red meat but I still use butter not daily, or in large quanites but a little organic butter I dont think is bad.

    • Actually women let other women breast feed their children for thousands of years. They were called wet nurses. Perhaps through an ancient civ course in with the nutrition stream.

    • I’m responding to the part of your comment about not letting another woman breastfed your baby. It is a human right for a human baby to have human milk whenever, wherever she needs nourishment, nurturing, or hydration. Sharing milk, feeding milk from another woman is the most normal thing. This is how cultures before us have always supported a baby to have human milk. There is an amazing world wide network of women (started by my friend) Human Milk 4 Human Babies. Find your a state and country group on FB. These women are sharing their milk for baby whose mother can not breastfed. It is the ONLY option and alternative to mother’s milk. WHY NOT another woman’s milk .. while this culture thinks it’s ok to use milk from a field beast processed through many machines and handles and chemicals or manmade formula of chemicals. The world has survived to today because of milk sharing. The stories of the miracles of babies turning around medically and nutritionally are astounding. These women who share their milk with others and those who receive have amazing bonds with each other and their babies. It could just change the planet.

    I enjoy your healthy advice and suggestions; it is very refreshing and enlightening. Much of what you speak about in reference eating healthy, I agree with and am very interested in what you have to say in regards to living a healthy lifestyle. I do not believe in dieting, but in eating healthy and maintaining a consistent lifestyle . Dieting never works! Food is my friend, not my enemy! I control the food, it doesn’t me.

    I have just begun eating dulse and really enjoy the texture. I diagnosed myself as having hypothyroidism with a thyroid goiter, which means my thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones (low functioning). I have done a lot of research and have come to realize I have an iodine deficiency. I do not choose to take any synthetic thyroid hormones, but instead, I would prefer to allow my thyroid to be healed naturally. I have heard of the horrible nightmares of some patients who are taking the prescription drug levothyroxine and other drugs for thyroid issues.

    My diet consists of a variety of foods such as water, unsweetened almond milk, chia seeds added to smoothies, raw almonds, bananas, apples, oranges, natural juices, 100 coconut water, fish, brown rice occasionally, just to name some of my favorites. Aerobic exercise is also a part of my regular fitness regimen. With my diet and exercise program, I am stimulated physically, mentally, emotionally, and spriritually. I am looking forwarding to seeing great results as I watch my goiter shrink to its healthy size.

    • You should make sure that your hypothyroidism is not caused by an autoimmune disease (Hoshimotos Thyroiditis) which is very common. If so, then taking iodine or lots of foods that contain iodine will make your problem much worse. I am currently taking synthroid and would love to know what the horror stories are? I would love to not take any meds., but I haven’t figured out a way to do that as of yet.

      • I consulted a Homeopath in LA, and she’s a medical doctor and was diagnosed with a thyroid problem shortly after she graduated. She researched an alternative and found homeopathy cured the thyroid. She studied homeopathy and practices in LA and has a website. You can perhaps send her an email and ask about a treatment. She is Dr. Feder.

        • Not possible. Homoeopathy is nothing. There is literally nothing in a homoeopathic remedy besides the carrier.

  20. It amuses me that this list does not include sugar in its various forms, which is arguably the worst, most over-consumed dietary component in most developed countries.

  21. Whoever made the comment about the fact that we are going to die is an idiot. Of course we are going to die, one way or another,there is no doubt. The question is, how are you going to die? A long, dragged out illness for many months or years that you spend trying to fight off the disease or illness before you finally and mercifully take your last breath and end your misery? Or spend most of your days in good health before a sudden and quick disease takes your life after living longer than most people who didn’t care about their diet and health? You should be so lucky if you lived everyday of your life eating the junk you wanted, doing the things you loved and enjoyed them, and then just one day keel over and leave this place. You would be so lucky if that happened but we all see how many people suffer for months or years on end, before they die. It’s not only about living longer but the amount of time you suffer before you go.
    So for those of you who laugh and deride Kimberly’s advice and website, go somewhere else and eat whatever you want, however you want. It’s your life. But there are people, like myself, who actually hope to spend most of my days feeling well and happy, than more days trying to fight off an illness or sickness because of my terrible lifestyle.

    • Well. I have just finished six months of chemo for advanced Stage four Breast Cancer! NO MORE! I’ve had a lot of time to read and feel the effects of chemo! Changing my whole lifestyle is what I am choosing to do now. Hopefully, it won’t be too late! But, even if it is I don’t want to go out the chemo way. came too close and watched others die in great pain. Sure hope you this and really get it!!!! Wish I had woken up a long time ago. I’m not ready to give up so I’m gonna eat healthy meaning all of what’s in this article and no sugar, booze, meat, butters and marg, dairy. Just bought a vitamix and planning on living for a bit yet!!!!!!

    Mr Babauta links to several peer-reviewed studies that show that soy is not the danger that the quack-science WAPF would want you to believe – and the WAPF seems to be the only source to the “soy is unhealthy and dangerous” claim.

  24. I mostly agree with this except for the dairy part. Dairy is most of my protein source since I’m lazy and mostly don’t cook meat because of that. I guess it’s a personal thing, as much dairy as I eat my skin is actually in really good shape, I don’t have a lot of belly fat and it doesn’t seem to make me gain weight even though I eat/drink full fat dairy. Although I do get really good sources of dairy that are very lightly pasteurized, grass-fed, and non-homogenized. Also no one in my fam. is lactose intolerant. Just look at the gorgeous scandinavians who practically live off of dairy as well.

    Like I said though, it’s a personal thing and it seems to work for me.

    • I would love to hear from the seniors, is there anyone over 55 who changed their way of eating, began eating foods Kimberly Snyder recommends, and owns a VitaMix Blender, and uses it, and has had good results. Anyone over the age of 60, I challenge you to write, and tell the skeptics about the results.

      • Hi there, I am 70 and look about 50. Remain extremely active in sports and traveling, returning only to watch over grand children. Anyway, I have tons of energy and still in the dating game. Been divorced for some time and all my boy friends are much younger. Kim’s book has caught the eye of both myself and my daughter. We are both very much into nutrition and our bodies and know alot about what is right for our bodies. Kim’s book explains so much about ” why” which is hard to come by even at alternative clinics. So many of those people are very smart and right but never seem to explain all the why’s. As we read her book, we have those ah ha moments in discovering “oh, thats why this or that works, etc.” We love her green drink and when we run out and don’t have time to get another batch going, believe me, we really miss it. It makes you feel all the better about yourself and no sluggish little periods in the afternoon that you get when eating wrong. We cheat here and there but are very mindful every day of what we should and should not eat. So, I have to say in answer to your question, it is not hard to change your diet and certainly never to late no matter what age. You will see. Keeping the sugar and all the bad stuff out of your body lets it start immediately on repairing itself. I take absolutely no pharmaceutical drugs; the natural way is usually the best way by far. As you get older, you will discover the rewards more and more as you watch your friends fall to the wayside on their western diets of unhealthy foods. By the way, I eat all meats, not a vegan. We watch the GMO foods also, only buy organic or grass fed meat, and try to supply our own good veggies as much as we can. Looking forward to Kim’s recipes.

      • I gave my dad, age 75, a book called Clean by Alejandro Junger which basically adopts much of Kimberly’s principles including her GGS. He did the detox for 20 days, lost 17 pounds and has completely changed the way he eats for a more healthy lifestyle. He still snow ski’s and is very active. His only complaint is that he feels weaker sometimes. Perhaps he needs more protein in his diet. He does not own a Vitamix but loves to make green smoothies.

      • I am 57 and have been over weight for twenty plus years, sometimes bordering on obesity . Truly have tried many diets and with menopause and a diagnosed hypothyroidism condition have found it extremely hard to lose weight. I bought Kimberly’s book and do a combination of the basic plan and the second plan. I have walked 16 miles a week for approximately four years. This is the only plan that has helped me to actually lose weight. I choose for now to not give up eggs, venison
        or fish! originally started this plan to help my knees maybe that is why it is successful for me. Bottom line; I think you need to bring your own common sense and values to anything you read or see and glean from it what works for you. The beauty of this age is you know not everyone will agree with you or like you everyday and that is ok and whats wonderful is you really don’t care! ;)

      • Yes I have an 83 yr. old mom and she has green smoothies, and no dairy. A diet of dense grain bread seeds and nuts, fruit, salads. Coconut sugar. Organic eggs, raw nuts, hemp milk.
        She’s much better with that diet, her arthritis is less severe. Also 2000mg of turmeric daily.

    • Yes just look at the Scandanavians – they consume the most dairy and have the highest rate of heart attacks (and breast cancer and oesteoperois) in the world.

      Cows milk is for calves. if you are consuming it, a baby cow is not, the males were killed at birth.

  28. Kimberly is right after I had my fibroids remove. The fibroids affected my kidneys and bladder. I remember the doctor saying that I had to stop drinking soda. It was an easy decision for me because my health was at risk. So out with the old and in with the new. Now water is my best friend. I have stoppped drinking pop and more water. So now I drink the water, detox tea, or green tea. I remember someone asking me how could I give up pop. My response was it was easy. There is things in it that is just bad for you. It keeps you wanting more with all the sugar. So it was an easy choice for me. So now I am manifesting eating right and exercising. Because the key is to keep moving.

    For two years now I am a vegan and feel great.
    The only thing that seriously concerns me on te long run is my B12 intake. I use a supplement but am worried my body might not absorb it. So I sometimes consume goats cheese (though I am against dairy for ethical and health reasons). What advise can you give me?

  36. Yes, agreed. This is a lit bit of overkill, telling people that all these things are dangerous. Come on! I have heavily altered my diet for the better over the past couple years and everything in moderation is definitely a better tag line than this is poison don’t eat it. I mean soda, sugary stuff and processed foods obviously aren’t good for you and I don’t partake in those anymore, but telling people that non-fat greek yogurt is bad you is BS. If you partake in the healthier “bad” food items in moderation coupled with regular exercise and a healthy social life, well, you should be fine. The real culprit here is sugarssssssssss, check the 60 minutes about how sugar is poison and that should change your mind about a few of these items, but nonetheless everything should be taken in moderation.

  39. Did you mean rBGH, which stands for Bovine growth hormone? In your article at the start it says rGBH. Also it should be noted that not all milk is created equal, you can get milk that is rBGH free, and in Canada no milk contains it. I was also wondering how you know that it creates a state of acidity in the body. Milk itself is only slightly acidic (6.4-6.8, with 1 being extremely acidic, 14 highly basic and 7 being neutral), so I am just wondering what the science is behind this.

    • To be fair, it’s not telling you that at all. It’s advising readers to change their diet, and you are free to ignore this advice.

    I have the issue with my kids of being under-wight (not an eating disorder). We met with a nutritionist who pretty much had to cringe while telling my kids all the opposite things she’s used to saying, like: drink whole milk, gatorade is better than water, ice cream whenever wanted, etc… how can I get the protein, fat, calcium, etc into an underweight 15 yr old, but without all the bad dairy,juice,egg issues you have listed here.

      Nuts contain the first two, and often the third! Snack on all sorts of nuts all the time. How about a bit of good quality dark chocolate now and again (although younger tastebuds often dislike the bitterness of dark chocolate).

  43. incredibly boring! i was on that health ‘n diet trip for a few years, mainly to loose weight (event though i wasnt overweigth or ill) and get in shape. now that i ‘ve achieved these goals i ‘ve been enjoying all of those “forbidden fruits” again for nearly a year and i tell ya: life is so much better & easier when not about worrying the right food/meal every minute of the day and when not becoming depressed in case you gave up to your cravings and “sinned” a little. Life is to short to not consume fat and sugar. As long as you do sports and limit consumption to e.g. 1 meal a day or the weekend you wont become obese or get ill. Its just the way every animal, humans included, are genetically programmed: Fat and sugar is what we crave – decide for yourself – dont let the neither the food indusrty nor the militant health movement get into your head!

    • kcufdnim – I agree with your comments. We are not put onto this earth to watch every mouthful we eat. My granny enjoyed a good meal, so did my mother and so did my aunt, all of whom eventually died at 92, 86 and 92 respectively. As long as you have “a little of what you fancy” and do not overdo anything and also exercise then I believe we will live a long, healthy life. Obviously one also has to take into consideration our genetics. I am 74, play tennis, walk, do housework and generally keep active and hope, and expect, to live a good few years more.

    • agreed. I love food and am not about to give up a nice piece of toast with yummy butter and eggs. Just don’t over do the junk, fast food, and sodas and you should be fine. If you’re fat, that means you’re overdoing something haha.
      I practically live off of dairy and eggs and my body seems to really like them, as well as my taste buds soooo yah. I wonder if genetic heritage has anything to do with it? For example, hardly anyone of northern european descent is lactose intolerant and they’ve been consuming it for thousands of years and they haven’t died out yet lol so it can’t be that horrible for them. I mean isn’t milk the perfect food cause it has to be the only food for the babies for a while?

  44. I agree with your list with one exception: Mayonnaise. Heart healthy mayo is easy to make (in a food processor) from canola, saflower or olive oil, organic eggs, lemon juice and vinegar. It can also be used as a base for many salad toppings or dips.

  46. About three weeks ago I started drinking a kefir (similar to yogurt) smoothie every morning. I have never felt better. It’s gluten free, casein free and 99% lactose free. I agree with everything on your list except yogurt. Be smart about what you purchase. You can also do some research and make your own yogurt. :)

    Question…Is cultured almond milk yogurt acceptable as a snack?
    Also, I want to make some changes in my kids diets as well, especially eliminating (or at least reducing for now) dairy. The challenge is that they are both allergic to nuts. Any ideas on alternative milks? You mentioned coconut milk on an earlier post, would that be canned coconut milk or the kind in half gallon cartons?

I have been a strict vegan for 5 yrs, so some things are familiar to me though I am learning ALOT from your book, (so sad about agave!) Ok I am nursing can I detox? Is it safe, I know they say no to Hot yoga bec. the detox can come out in your breast milk. I had a baby 5 months ago, and I am 8-10 lbs. from my ideal/ regular weight, while I would love to hurry up the process, I know it will come off eventually and i do want to be safe. What are your thoughts- Thanks. Oh also how do you feel about organic, sprouted wheatberries, and bread made from it, thanks.

    Mustard is good. Buy the organic option, and without sugar (have never seen it with sugar). If you must have mayo, get the grapeseed oil Veganaise version. An even better route is to make your own fermented condiments. You can find recipes for things like this online or in books like: “Nourishing Traditions” by Sally Fallon. Her methods can be altered to make them vegan, if needed.

    Those things do not have to be kept in the fridge, but keep them in airtight containers away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight.

    You might start by removing just the bread and keeping the grains & legumes for a while. Add nuts, fruit, avacado, bigger pieces of salmon, and such to your lunch salad to make it more filling and sustaining (some oil and vinegar might help, too. Dropping a few raw eggs into your breakfast smoothie may fill it out a bit. You might try getting accustomed to strong tasting greens such as dandelion, escarole, raw mustard, arugula, etc; these can sometimes help you go further and longer than mild things like lettuce.

  55. Considering the 12 foods you have listed. How can I ensure a relatively high caloric intake on those? I am a very active individual (always hungry) and I don’t understand how let’s say salmon and salad can be enough for lunch. How can I skip grains, breads, legumes? I was recently told not to combine protein with complex carbohydrates… no chicken and rice or granola and yoghurt. I guess I don’t know how to keep me going in my endurance activities and keep my diet alkaline with enough protein and carbs. Smoothie for breakfast is not enough for me either, what can I have it with?

He said that in general, nuts and avacados as well as most healthy fats should be avoided What is your rule of thumb on that?

    • HI Larry, rice milk is okay. It often has polyunsaturated veg oils added in, and isn’t as nutritionally strong as almond or coconut milk.

  60. Some major vitamin deficits can develop when dairy is eliminated.
    One is Vitamin D, which plays a major role in health. I can’t think of even 5 people I know who would eat a probiotic enzyme sandwich.
    Food should taste good, and be healthy. Its possible to achieve both.

    • Hi Sally, there are other sources to obtain adequate vitamin D levels. With dairy, there are a lot of negatives to weigh against some potential positives.

      • Vitamin B12 is one of the vitamins that can only be found in animal products. A deficiency could cause permanent damage to the brain and central nervous system. Vegetarians need to watch out for this, and vegans particularly need to watch out for this since they are not getting any even through dairy products (and b12 that is found in plants cannot be digested in humans since it is a particularly tricky protein). You can take supplements or eat vitamin-fortified food, but then im sorry, what the heck is the point of trying to have an all natural diet?

    • I keep my nuts in the fridge, but I don’t keep my quinoa/millet in jars. I buy it and use it fairly quickly. Yes I pack almonds in paper towels if they are still moist, though only pack enough that you would eat in a sitting or for the journey, so they don’t get moldy! xx

  63. This sounds so good, so healthy. I’m scared about all the poison in all our – industrial prepared – food by now… and all the lying in the commercial.

    But – help me please – if you ban the juices due too much sugar in them, i hope you don’t ban the 100 % fruit – smoothies or 100 % fruit direct juices (which are not concentrated)….
    If these juices and smoothies are also banned to too high fruit sugar content why are fresh organic fruits better then? should be the same amount of fruit sugar in them, i would suppose…

    What about flour, potatoes, rice, noodles, bread ? is this banned too?

      I love fruit, and believe a healthy, balanced body thrives on fruit. Fresh, whole fruit and fruit smoothies contain the whole fruit with its fiber. I’m not a fan of straight fruit juice because the fiber is removed.

      I always say upgrade your foods. For you list at the bottom for instance, I would approve of brown rice flour, amaranth flour, millet flour, sweet potatoes, brown rice, rice or buckwheat (soba) noodles, millet bread and other gluten-free breads…see! There are tons of upgraded options from the processed varieties. xx

    What is “GGS”?

    Where do you get minerals from? all from salad?
    in Germany died prox. 100 people last year from EHEC from bad Bocksklee-seeds (sorry, no chance to find a translation for Bocksklee..)

    And leafy salad is said to be full of nitrates and shouldn’t been eaten more often thatn twice a week…

    I’m sure I could enlarge this list about unhealthy veggies and fruits with no end…

    What can we eat by now then?
    not to forget to throw away every kind of sugar or of course artificial sweeteners in any form of it’s appearance… white rice, white flour…

    • Hi Tina,
      Nature is my teacher. I think the best approach is to eat foods from nature, that work best with our digestive tract/anatomy. I also believe in fortifying your system with lots of probiotics and probiotic-rich foods so your immunity is really strong. You can’t live in feat of everything! Try to eat organic and local as much as possible, wash your berries :), and feel/customize the foods that are best in tune with your body. xx

I’m a Korean and there are a lot of pickled vegetables (kimchi, wild herbs, onions, garlic, etc) made with sault, or soy sauce and vinegar. Besides kimchi, I highly doubt they are healthful. Are there any dangers or concerns I should be worried about our family’s regular consumption of these high-sodium foods?

    • Hi Stephanie! Yes sodium can really add up in pickled foods and should be limited! Encourage your family to get more salads/veggies instead. It only takes about 3 days for me to get clients used to eating far less sodium then they are used to. xx

  66. It’s definitely important to avoid any GM foods, including soy, however it’s worth mentioning that certified organic foods are, by definition, always GM free. Unless you have a legitimate soy allergy, I see no reason to avoid certified organic tofu… it’s minimally processed (unlike soy protein isolate and other abstractions) and quite tasty as well.

  68. I’ve been only drinking coconut milk since I can’t find almond milk without soy lecithin. You mention it here as a “keeper”, but I’d love to hear your thoughts about the different options for non-dairy milks. Is there any reason to limit coconut milk? I sometimes add it to tea and I love to mix it with chia seeds.

    • I like coconut milk, but it’s important to limit your overall fat intake. There is such a thing as too much fat, even if it is good fat.

      Boxed almond milk, albeit with a small amount of soy lecithin is still a viable option, and fat better than most alternatives out there.

      It sounds like your uses are quite limited however, so in moderation it is totally fine.

        • Yes, I make brazil nut milk all the time. I bought a Soybella and it’s super easy to make the milk fresh. I don’t add anything but you can add vanilla or stevia or whatever else you like. I had an amazing chocolate milk recently with honey and cacao powder mixed in. You can also make fresh coconut milk which is like heaven. just blend the meat with the water and that’s it.

  69. I understand (and share) your concerns re mainstream (aka GMO) tofu. However, I’m curious if you share the same sentiments toward locally-produced, organic tofu. I’m convinced that the two are as different as GMO mass-produced tomatoes and local heirloom tomatoes (the science behind those differences in particular has been in the news a lot recently).

  70. I get organic eggs for my husby and he drinks my smoothies so we don’t buy juice anymore. I use the Non-soy dairy free organic Veganaise. Prob best to omit altogether but useful for when we’re craving mayo. Darn, we have organic ketchup. It doesn’t indicate HFCS but states milled sugar. Thoughts? I have all the other things on your keep list along with some sea vegetables.

  72. I agree with most of these (especially foods containing nitrates), but dairy is a very healthy food source, if you get the right kind. The China Study had many flaws, and one of them was they didn’t differentiate between CFLA and organic, green fed animals. I get raw milk from a local goat farmer who does not feed her goats GMOs, soy, or corn. I also eat pastured, organic butter which is a very healthy fat containing CLA (in fact I also take butter oil/fermented cod liver oil capsules for healthy fats).

    I also don’t think ketchup is bad…I get organic ketchup (and sometimes make my own) that does not contain HFCS. Anything with HFCS is dangerous. And as bad as soy oil is, the worst ingredient in most mayonnaise is the canola oil, which is GMO and contains trans fats from the deodorization process.

  73. Hi I really enjoy the information in this article. Such a breeze of fresh air from a lot of articles bombarding the internet emphasizing on the importance of dairy and animal products. I do agree on the eggs as well even though I don’t really consume any animal products now as I’ve gone raw vegan. I’ve read in articles that male chicks are mostly placed and killed since they’re of no use in the egg production whether be it organic or non-organic. That’s why I don’t consume them for ethical and health reasons!!

Hi Kimberly, I know you mentioned you have concerns about Tofu and while I agree that it’s more processed than is desirable, I think that you should reconsider qualifying it as a high-risk item. There have been some controversial soy studies and I was pretty concerned about them as well until I read Dr. Norris’ thorough review of several studies including those that raise the concern of soy. I think he does an excellent job of putting things into perspective and parsing the information about those studies.

  76. Thank you Kimberly. I have a question for you. I love the GGS and was drinking it regularly, My blood was just tested and I have thyroid nos. a little on the high side. Not too much… Over 4 when it is supposed to be 2 or under. My doctor wanted to start me on synthroid but gave me 6 weeks to try to help my thyroid production naturally with food and supplements. I don’t want to take unnecessary meds. My problem is that I’ve read a lot of articles that say in addition to soy being detrimental to thyroid function, pears and raw cruciferous vegetables are also. And peanut butter etc. Can I substitute the pears in the smoothie for something else like pineapple and can I substitute the Kale in your salad for Romaine or something? And if you have any other suggestions to help me in my thyroid & unwanted weight battle, please, please let me know. Thank you very much!

    • In the normal scheme of things, if we truly followed natural human behaviour a child of two would be still breastfeeding, and even many children would breastfeed up until or beyond the age of four. Human milk for humans.

    • That wouldn’t really help with some of the issues I’m talking about, though it at least wouldn’t GMO. Why don’t you try organic tempeh instead?
