Enjoying Chia Seeds

Chia seeds provide complete protein, as well as antioxidants, vitamins, a variety of minerals such as calcium, and are a rich, plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids (ALA). Chia seeds have a high level of soluble and insoluble fiber, and swell up to 15 times their size when mixed with liquids to create a filling gel that provides long-burning fuel as it cleanses your digestive system. Because they are so nutrient-dense and filling, chia seeds can help reduce cravings and keep you on track with your diet. I eat them daily.

The brand of chia seeds I consume and recommend is Australian Chia & Co. It is grown in Western Australia where the land is high unpopulated and the soil is very pure and uncontaminated, which is why they produce a superior chia seed with enhanced levels of Beauty Minerals and nutrients.

Kim, I have the same question as some of the others… I don’t know when to eat the chia seeds? I usually have the avacado with salad for lunch or veggies and rice, so I wasn’t sure if I should have the chia seeds right after lunch? Or wait for 3 hrs and have some chia seeds and pumpkin seeds (esp if I was going to work out)? but then wouldn’t that be considered snacking?

Would the best time be about an hour after the GGS? Please help.

I would be very curious hear what you have to say about Ashley’s question re: combining avocado and chia seeds in the same meal. I always want to have avocado in my dinner salad, and Chia Seed Delight for dessert! Also, I’d like to include the TBS of flax seed in my dinner salad with avocado, but I’m worried that also is a bad combination. Any thoughts? Thanks Kimberly!

    Kimberly,

If I am having the GGJ for breakfast, salad for lunch, and GGS for afternoon snack, when would it be best to add the Chia Seed Smoothie? I really want to include chia seeds in my diet. I love your book, website, and newsletter.

    Thank so much!

    Hey Kim!
So, I am a cross country and track runner in high school, and I enjoy the power protein smoothie about two to three times a week after practice. I like to grind the chia seeds in a coffee grinder before I put them in the blender, but I have been wondering whether or not that is okay to do. I started doing that because I didn’t know whether or not I was able to swallow the whole seeds since I have heard that you can from one website, but that you can’t from another. Also, how long do the seeds need to soak before consumption? I have heard from ten minutes to a couple of hours.
Thank you Kim! I cannot find these questions anywhere else.

Hi, have you heard of Mila chia seeds? According to Mila fanatics they are the “best” chia blend and are refined into a powder for better absorption. But they are more expensive then the brand you recommended… I don’t know which ones to buy?? Or if it is worth spending more on Mila?? Has anyone else tried Mila versus other Chia brands?

Still curious if any of you chia lovers have tried Mila Chila brand and see if it is worth paying more for the ground up seeds and this brand. THANKS so much in advance for the advice :)

    Hi Kimberly,

Your book has really changed our family’s life, thank you!
Regarding Chia Seeds, I love them and mix them with most things (particularly for the protein and Fatty Acids).

However, I have a health concern. I have been trying to see if CHIA contains lignans or phytoestrogens? Not much has been published officially on this characteristic of chia seeds so I need your help because we eat it with everything!

Some studies have indicated that there is a correlation between the phytoestrogens in soy and breast/prostate cancer and it makes me wonder whether phytoestrogens/lignans are a cause for concern if present in other seeds, beans etc.

God bless you for all the good you do to help others!

    Hey Kim,

Thanks so much for introducing me to chia seeds! I absolutely love eating the chia seed delight!

I have a question….Is it okay to combine avocado and flax seed or chia seeds with your dinner salad or is it bad because you would be combining protein and fat?

Also, sometimes about an hour after eating a salad with avocado I will have millet with a sweet potato mashed together. Is this okay or should I skip the avocado and or flax seeds on my salad on the days that I have the millet and sweet potato…is it even okay that I’m combining the millet and sweet potato? Thanks so much!!!

I don’t think avocado and chia seeds make a good combination. According to the health book I read that also advocates plant-based diet and lifestyle detoxing, mixing these two food results in poor digestion. The book lists avocado under the category of ‘fat and oil’, while seeds as ‘protein’ and it is not a good idea to combine both together.

EJ – I do not recommend adding chia seeds to the GGS. If you a smoothie with Chia Seeds you should try my power protein smoothie.

Do you get the white or black ones (or does it even matter), and YES – I too would like to know other ways to enjoy besides your chia seed delight recipe!!! Are there combining rules that apply to these seeds?

I’ve tried Mila and then I tried a milled Chia from Dr. Wayne Coates, a.k.a. “The Father of Chia”, who coincidentally was the original Mila spokesman for LifeMax, the company behind Mila. I’ve had tremendous results from Dr. Coates Chia that I paid $10 for 16 oz. at AZchia.com I can’t justify paying 5x the price for Mila.
