25 Snacks That Will Give You Energy Throughout The Day

applez

Our energy is integrally connected to the foods we eat. The foods we choose to put in our body can either boost our energy, or drag us down. Here are great energizing foods that will support our general well-being and health. There are 25 of ‘em, so I’ll get right into it!

1. Apples:

Everyone knows “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and it’s true! Apples contain lots of vitamins and minerals, and are also a rich source of flavonoids and polyphenols, both of which are powerful antioxidants. Try eating them in the morning and include in smoothies.
Healthy Snack

2. Bananas:

Bananas are one of the best sources of potassium, which helps maintain normal blood pressure and heart function in the body. Bananas are a convenient snack with a peel that you can throw in your purse or carry-on, that is sure to boost your energy levels during an afternoon lull.
Healthy Food

3. Red Peppers:

Bell peppers are bursting with antioxidant vitamins A and C- also great for skin beauty. Red peppers in particular contain lycopene, which has been linked to cancer prevention. Red peppers are great to snack on if you want that satisfying crunch. Try dipping in salsa for an afternoon snack.
Healthy Foods

4. Hummus:

Hummus is a healthy energy-boosting snack that is sure to satisfy the creamy-salty cravings. It’s a great energy booster when paired with other items on this list, like red peppers, carrots and cucumbers. Try the Raw Chickpea-Free Hummus recipe with zucchini instead of cooked chickpeas, and raw tahini. You’ll still get amino acids and calcium from the raw tahini, but in a lighter, non-starchy form.
Healthy Snack

5. Organic Dark Chocolate:

If you have a sweet tooth, organic dark chocolate is sure to satisfy those cravings, and is better than having dessert snacks that contain refined starches, which will deplete B vitamins that we need for energy. I recommend non-dairy, organic dark chocolate because it contains the highest amount of powerful antioxidants. There is some sugar in it, so limit portion size to 1-2 oz a day.
Healthy Snack

6. Pumpkin seeds:

These seeds are packed with minerals such as magnesium, iron, and calcium, vitamin K and protein. These seeds will be sure to satisfy that crunchy craving when you need a boost. Lighter than nuts, try a quarter of a cup of them in the afternoon a few hours after lunch, especially if you are working out after work or have a long stretch before dinner.
Healthy Snack

7. Carrots:

Carrots are high in fiber, so they are a great crunchy way to take the edge off hunger, while providing some good nutrition. They contain high amounts of Vitamin A, in the form of Beta-Carotene, which is good for the eye sight. Since they are a veggie which combines well with most other foods, they are great to snack on throughout the day.
Healthy Snack

8. Celery:

Celery is a refreshing source of fiber, vitamin C and B-vitamins. It has a diuretic effect, due to its balance of the electrolytes potassium and sodium, which helps to flush out excess fluid from the body. Celery is also believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. It is also great with hummus for a more substantial snack, or try adding it to the Glowing Green Smoothie (see below!)
Healthy Snack

9. Pureed veggie soup:

Making a pureed veggie soup is a great way to get in those veggies on a cold day. Nothing is more comforting than a warm bowl of soup, so try boosting your energy with a bowl of pure veggies! Because the soup is blended, your body can easily absorb the nutrients that become readily available, without wasting energy breaking them down.
Healthy Drink

10. Lemon Water:

It may sounds simple, but sipping water with lemon (cold or hot) is known to provide energy. One of the biggest forms of fatigue is dehydration, so make sure to sip up! Lemon gives an added boost of vitamins and enzymes. Be sure to start your day with a cup of hot water with lemon.
Healthy Snack

11.Oatmeal:

Oats are one of the healthiest carbs you can find. Try some natural oats (oat groats are my favorite) in the morning, at least 25 minutes after you’ve had some fruit or if you are still hungry after having the Glowing Green Smoothie. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top for even more health benefits and more flavor.
Healthy Drink

12. Glowing Green Smoothie:

Try blending up a batch of my signature smoothie when you feel low on energy. It’s packs a huge amount of greens into one drink, with a bit of fruit to sweeten the taste so it is delicious. Loaded with vitamins, enzymes, minerals, amino acids and filling fiber, this is my daily ritual for breakfast and a mid-afternoon snack.
Healthy Snack

13. Watermelon:

Watermelon is a great snack, especially in the summer when it’s in season. It contains lycopene, which as mentioned earlier, has been linked to cancer prevention. Be sure to eat it on an empty stomach to experience its full benefits. As with other non-starchy/non-fatty fruits, it digests quickly and needs to pass out of the stomach so it doesn’t prematurely ferment behind slower-digesting foods.
Healthy Drink

14. Coconut water:

Drinking coconut water is one of the best ways to naturally rehydrate the body. It is packed full of electrolytes and has detoxifying properties. Young coconuts are best, but are not always convenient (!). You can find coconut water in cartons in most health food grocery stores these days.
Healthy Snack

15. Green Salad:

There’s nothing like a nice, green salad to provide an energy burst. Greens are filled with vitamins and minerals, and digest fairly quickly so you’ll feel the energy. Use a light dressing that includes lemon, and this is a perfect way to get some nutrition when feeling low on energy.
Healthy Snack

16. Pineapple:

Pineapple is easy to digest, and contains the enzyme bromelain, which helps aids in digestion and has cleansing properties. Again, be sure to eat on an empty stomach and alone.
Healthy Snack

17. Blueberries:

Blueberries are a delicious, energetic snack. These berries are also known to promote brain function and boost energy, so they are a good thing to eat before a test, or when you need to focus. They are abundant and in season at the moment!
Healthy Snack

18. Avocado:

Filled with fiber and healthy fats and fiber, avocados are one of my daily staples. They are awesome to keep your skin smooth and youthful as well. They are also known to help lower cholesterol. If you don’t like to eat them plain, try adding avocados to salads.
Healthy Snack

19. Raw Granola:

Granola is a great snack when you’re feeling hungry mid-day. Make sure you choose a granola that is not overly processed (a raw variety if you can find it), is preferably gluten-free and does not have a ton of added sugar. Its best to try and make your own, with a base of buckwheat groats.
Healthy Drink

20. Herbal Tea:

This is a nice thing to sip when you don’t want to eat anything late at night or in the mid-morning or afternoon. Make sure to go caffeine free. I suggest red rooibos because it contains lots of antioxidants and has a nice flavor.

21. Dried Figs:

Dried figs are an amazing blood purifier and help dissolve mucus and toxins from our system. Make sure you choose brands that don’t add sugars or additives. Figs have a fairly high amount of sugar, so really limit portion size to only a few. If you have  Candida or another sugar issue, you should avoid dried and regular fruit.
Healthy Snack

22. Strawberries:

A great snack for some fiber, tons of vitamin C, as well as biotin (great for skin/hair/nails) and folic acid. Strawberries contain high levels of antioxidants. Perfect for the summer!
Healthy Snack

23. Quinoa:

Quinoa is a great grain to add to your diet because it is a complete protein, and contains all the essential amino acids. It is one of the most nutritious, filling grains you can choose.
Healthy Snack

24. Cucumber:

Cucumber is known to be a beauty vegetable and full of the beauty mineral silicon. It’s a delicious, hydrating and nutrient-rich snack that tastes great on its own, or dipped in hummus. Try making cucumber salad with raw apple cider vinegar.
Healthy Snack

25. Raw Sauerkraut:

Sauerkraut is a probiotic-rich food. Probiotics help create B vitamins which will be sure to give you the energy you need throughout your day. Try my Probiotic & Enzyme Salad recipe so you can make your own raw sauerkraut for cents a day.

    Hi Kimberly,

I tried the Green Smoothie this morning and found it to be thick for my liking. What can I do to make it less thick?

    Thank,

I add water to mine if it’s too thick and more lemon juice to balance out the flavor. Also, sometimes I add a pure orange essential oil to mine for more flavor.

I add cold water – or ice and blend to give it a frozen smoothie consistency. I don’t like it thick either and the extra water doesn’t hurt.

    Hello,
I’ve just recentely bought your books but I’ve realized that there are lots of ingredients that you use iin the recipes which I am allergic to.
I always had difficulties for allergy reason to go on a diet, for example I am allergy to almost every fruit and vegetable like cerory, tomatoes, avocados, peppers, corn, salad etc. I don’t eat them not because I don’t like the taste but because I feel sick and have bad reactions. Plus I am also allergic to nuts, dry fruits. buckwheat, oatmeal. Intollerant to dairy products.
    Do you have any suggestions?
I am really hoping you would be able to help me.

    Thank you again

    Hi Kimberly,

I was wondering about flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds. I was reading what you wrote about the importance of soaking them before you eat them but I was wondering if you can just grind them and use them without having to soak them. also because when I soaked the flaxseeds I got this gel like thing on then and I didn’t know if you eat that too. Can you grind nuts too?

    Thank you,

While there is a lot of good information in this article, I highly suggest that people steer clear of carrots as a snack food. Carrots are very high on the glycemic index. I’ve seen more than one dieter fail when they relied on carrots as a snack because they do cause sugar highs and sugar lows.

As for avocados – I have to say they are my favorite snack fuel. I’ve come to refer to a cold avocado as vegetable pudding. Between avocados and small amounts of dark, raw chocolate, I have found that I have far fewer sweet and carbohydrate cravings.

I’ve also found that muscle aches and pains seem to diminish after an avocado and chocolate snack.

I just love these snacks naturally. I was born in the farm where we grew bananas, avocado, pineapple and many types of vegetables. These are not just wonderful but delicious as well. The 3 of my favorites are avocado, banana and pineapple. I always have a banana in breakfast, that’s everyday. Feels good and either pineapple or avocado during dinner. Hope this will serve as an inspiration for anyone who wants to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Living healthy is not difficult, thinking the basics it’s easy, really!

I don’t get severe headaches, but I do get mild ones. I eat a banana a day when I am riding my bike a lot because the potasium prevents muscle craps and avocodos are a staple in my diet. I don’t find they trigger migrains at all.

Does anyone have a recipe for purred veggie soup? Please don’t just tell me to add in some of my fav veggies (carrots, broccoli, cucumber, bell peppers, tomatoes (veggie?), spinach, zucchini/squash (to an extent)…that’s all I can think of at the moment..I might eat the soup with other veggies, so don’t exclude those) and call it a day. I’d like some guidelines for a recipe if you can.

I find that I am going about this all wrong….I seem to always get way too involved with WHAT TO EAT…WHEN TO EAT…HOW TO EAT IT
trying one recipe after another after another…I feel that all I do is think about FOOD…and I am actually sick of it

This list is a God send….it allows me to finally KEEP IT SIMPLE!

I can just pick up a piece of fruit or 2 and feel ok…if I need something more substantial I’m sure the Pureed Veggie Soup will hit the spot…and so on!

I will try other things…maybe on special occasions…but for now and for everyday use…this list will do the trick for me especially when I still have to cook the S-A-D for my non-conformist family LOL…

Again thank you for helping a newbie

Hi Kimberly! I’m very inspired by you and what you have to say! I just saw you for the first time on t.v. this a.m. on a local show in Cleveland. I have a complicated history – so I realize you can’t answer all my questions :) Any advice would be much appreciated. I take many medications for various disorders. I also try so hard to eat/be healthy to counteract all the toxins in my body. Unfortunately, I’m afraid my obsessive nature and a well-meaning clerk at a health food store led to my becoming aneorexic – it’s actually a newly discovered form called “orthoexia” where people are not intentionally trying to lose weight but do because of obsessively trying to adhere to healthy eating standards, exercise, etc. I was told not to eat so many foods (due to my severe migraines, IBS, so-called gluten-sensitivity, hypothyroidism, etc,) and also to not combine fruits and veggies and to follow the Blood Type Diet that it got to the point where my diet became VERY limited. Then, I found out online that lettuce and celery have a chemical in them that can cause migraines. So – no more salads either! I’ve lost a ton of weight and have become afraid to eat! You might want to say, “go to a shrink” (already do), or “go to a nutritionist” (already have), or “get off the meds” (can’t right now). I’m no better off. I’m scared to take a multi-vitamin because so many vitamins and minerals negatively interact with certain meds I take. Is there any way I can have some semblance of health in my condition or am I a lost cause? :) Thanks in advance and thanks for the work you are doing to better the lives of people and promote healthy living ~ Sharon

      HI Sharon,
Thanks for writing. I have heard of orthorexia, and it is greatly on the rise. I think you need to not get so caught up in the minutia of everything and look more holistically at your diet. Fruits and greens combine well, as in the GGS. By sticking to plant foods and grains such as quinoa, which by the way contains lots of magnesium which can help prevent migraines, you will be getting a wide variety of nutrients that work in conjunction with one another to keep you healthy. Focus on eating whole foods.
Over time, you may not need all those meds as much as you think, as you gain more control over your health with your diet. xx

    Hi dear!
I’ve never been fat (always normal weight) but I had your diet for a month and lost 10 pounds. I just want to be healthy because I’m turning 50 on December. Also I think about menopause which should start soon. I feel and look very good and also I go to gym.
I started eating gluten free bread. I;m wondering can I eat whole wheat bread, rise or pasta (little bit not much).
I liked your book, got a lot of information. Thank you so much!!!

Yes you can keep things in balance! I recommend brown rice and quinoa/brown rice pasta if you can find it, or else the wheat products in moderation, if you would like. xx

    Hi Kimberly!
Just wondering if you could recommend a brand of granola that is delicious but healthy at the same time? I normally end up buying the sugary granola bars!:( Is there a way I could make healthy granola on my own with oats and honey or something? Lemme know if you have a good recipe or anything! Thank you so much & Love all your info! You are truly inspiring! :)

I make cucumber water by adding cucumber slices, lemon and fresh ginger (optional) to a pitcher of water. Sometimes I just float a slice of each in a glass of water. It tastes clean and crisp and seems to be colder and more thirst-quenching than plain water. I don’t normally care for water per se, but tend to drink more of it when prepared this way.

I used to reach for a cup of coffee in the afternoon when I’d feel very sluggish and for the past several months I’ve been eating an apple which always seems to pick me up. Now I’ve got many more choices! Thanks!

Just getting into your book, find it fasinating & am learning a lot about a healthy diet. There are many ?’s I have & would like to discuss with someone, esp. about food amts. & substitutions. I don’t feel as I have a healthy grip on what foods digest slower/faster & am still reading. Love the GGS & have been drinking it every a. m. for 3 days. I feel like I have more energy in that short period of time.

Thank you so much for your book. I feel great! I have lost weight, my skin looks great and I went shopping for a dress for a upcoming wedding and everyone in the dressing room were amazed how I look. They could not believe I was pushing a double stroller.

PS What natural food web-site Can I buy supplies from?

How do you feel about greek yogurt? Do you believe it is as healthy as they say it is? I don’t eat it every day, but I have heard great things about it! Just wanted to hear your thoughts on it! :) Thanks!

In the Beauty Detox Solution she advises to stay away from dairy. which therefore means no Greek yogurt… she does recommend having coconut milk yogurt, though.

    Hi Kimberly!

I can’t get enough of your book or blog they are so informational. I absolutely love your book! Also, your passion for a more holistic lifestyle is amazing and contagious! I do have one question though. I’ve always had bad acne. Although my skin has improved by becoming a Blossoming Beauty, would you recommend that I drink the GGS (without fruit) instead of the oat groats for breakfast to further help my skin?

Thank you so much for your help!!

    Beautiful Kimberly,
Thank you! I found Bikram yoga and you–boom-boom–at the same time. Compliments, apparently, of the great Paramahansa Yogananda (his younger brother was Bikram’s guru). I suspect Bikram’s not your cup of tea, nor mine, but do you like his yoga? (90-minute workout in a heated room. I love everything about it.) I would love to read more from you about yoga–it’s completely new to me; I’m a six-four 54-year-old block of cement, getting younger, flexible, detoxified, and, dare I say . . . beautiful. I sing and play guitar/piano five nights a week at Callahan’s Lodge in Southern Oregon. If you’re ever in the area, you’ve got a dinner and room for two free!! (Steak and seafood, but you can improvise.)
    Thank you, Kimberly,
    A million times,
    THANK YOU!
You wrote the book on Beauty, and you certainly live it.
(And since this is supposed to be a reply to the snacks blog, thanks for that too–I do look forward to picking your wisdom!)

    Hi Kim,

I’ve been following your book for a couple months now and I feel great and have lost those stubborn few lbs that weren’t coming off. I’ve become obsessed with all the dressings and recipes and LOVE the GGS. I have one every morning without fail and even got my spinach hating husband to have one every morning with me. Thank you!

I have a question regarding eating this way while pregnant. I just found out that I’m about 5-1/2 weeks and just starting to feel just a little less energetic and wanting to eat more often the past couple of days. Is there any advice you can give me on pregnancy nutrition that would be any different from what I’m already doing? I know I have a really great start thanks to you!

Thanks for the encouragement, Kimberly. I’m going to copy this list and “train” myself to stick to it. These are great food choices. I do not have encouragement in my area to eat “mostly” raw and whole foods. Most people think I”m a fanatic. But we were never meant to eat fake foods and processed foods. The health care problems of today are evidence of that. I love your energy and patiance with folks wanting to do our best! THANKYOU! I’ve been reading your blog for some time and you do not disappoint.I’m on my way!!! Your GGS is the best. Pam

    Hi Kimberly,
I recently bought your book and think it has done wonders for my cravings and my skin, and I’ve only been following it for about a week or so. Still, while this maybe a little personal, I guess here goes – I haven’t been as “regular” as I sometimes am when I have coffee in the am or just in general. Any suggestions for trying to get this party moving (so to speak) ;)

    Thanks!

    Hi Kim,

I just finished reading your book. Love it! I now know dairy and coffee/caffeine should be cut out. However, my friend and I at work are starting with the GGS every morning but we are having a hard time giving up coffee (with cream) after drinking the GGS. Is this ruining the benefits by causing a traffic jam? :)

    Thank you so much,
    Kristen

        Hi Andrea,
I also love lattes, but I don’t feel good with coffee so this is what I drink later in the day, I love my GGS in the mornings. There is a coffee substitute called Inka, polish product made of Roasted Barley. I add it to very hot water and a little bit of milk (maybe almond milk would work) and then blend it with a battery operated foam maker. It does the trick for me and you can also add some cinnamon. Good luck!

Like you, I am very passionate about nutrition and health. I am looking to further this interest and undertake some studies and would love to email you some questions. Is there anywhere that I can do this? I am finding it very difficult to find the right course for me.

    Hi Kimberly,

I bought your book this past weekend and can’t seem to put it down! I attempted to make the Glowing Green Smoothie, but I think I put in too many greens as it tasted a little “greeny”. Would you be able to give an approximate amount of the romaine and spinach in “cup” amounts or “handfuls”….I am thinking the bunch of romaine that I purchased must have been too large. Also, most organic spinach in my area grocery stores comes in containers and not bunches….so an actual amount of each of these would be greatly appreciated as I am anxious to taste the GGS the way it is meant to taste….(I also have a awesome blender which made it very smooth so I know that’s not the issue)…Thanks so much and thanks for all the great advice in your book!:)

    Hey Kimberly :)

I just wanted to say that I love your Glowing Green Smoothie, I have one every morning and my skin is looking really good! It is truly a miracle worker. I sometimes have oatmeal with flaxseeds and cinnamon. Is it good or should I cut back on the oatmeal? I have it everyday. Also where can I find the recipe for the Rainforest Acai Smoothie? Oh and I love your book! Thank you so much for sharing.

Hey Salman, great, thanks! the recipe is in The Beauty Detox Solution- check the back!
Are you having natural oatmeal? Just keep it in balance with the other grains in your diet. If you have quinoa and a few pieces of millet bread later plus lots of oatmeal that’s a lot of starch. Also why don’t you try separating the flaxseeds from the oatmeal sometimes so your body only has to digest one at a time. put the flaxseeds on your salads instead, or use hempseeds. xx Kimberly

Thank you so much for replying :) The oatmeal I’m having is Quaker. I usually have it with Silk soy milk. Thanks for the advice on the flaxseeds, I will do that. I am getting so many compliments about my skin! I feel great! :D I don’t see this as a diet, it’s more of a lifestyle. Thank you so much!

Hopefully you’re not using whole flaxseeds. You can only get the full nutritional benefits from *ground* flaxseeds (also called flaxseed meal). Your body can’t break down whole flaxseeds, so they will pretty much pass out of your body the same shape they entered. Certainly not harmful, but definitely a waste of money and nutrients.

      1. kimberlysnyder

Yes I always recommend grinding the flaxseeds fresh in a spice grinder for the amount you use at that time.
I also soak my flaxseeds to remove the phytic acid and increase nutritional absorption.

Hey Kimberly! I’m obsessed with your blog :) Just a quick question, I usually snack on fruit, usually apples or bananas, how many should I have? I’m really confused! I don’t want to overeat! I would REALLY appreciate it if you help me.

HI Sam, Yay! If you are watching your weight, keep it to 1 banana a day. There is 1 in a big batch of GGS that may last over 2 days, so besides that you could have 1/2-1 other small one a day. My fridge is always full of 1/2 bananas, which drives everyone crazy! :)

I have an obsession with bananas! The reason why I asked you is cause I already have it in the Glowing Green Smoothie and sometimes I’ll have it as a snack too. So I was worried if I’m overeating on the bananas. Same here, people think I’m crazy! I love bananas! :) Thank you so much for replying X

What are your feelings about frozen blueberries ? And I have tried making the raw sauerkraut and both of the times I had mold on it… is this normal, or is there any ready ones I can buy at the store?
Thank you and by the way… I am loving my new life!! I feel amazing!!

HI Analicia, I am doing a tutorial soon on the Probiotic & Enzyme Salad. If there is mold at the top, you can thrown that away and the bottom is usually fine. The top may get black because of the contact with the air.
Frozen organic blueberries are good- but not as good as fresh!

This is sort of related to the question re: frozen blueberries. I just wanted to make sure that frozen green drinks retained the enzymes. I have limited time in the mornings and I would like to make the green drinks on Sundays and pour them into pour them into popsicle molds : )

I remember her answering this a while ago. I believe she said it is good in the refigerator for 2 and a half days or in the freezer for atleast 2 weeks (thats what I remember) or maybe even longer. i put mine in freezer safe quart size ziplock bags.

for the lady that asked the question about making raw sauerkraut and mold:

my kids love cultured veggies and we’ve found several tricks to prevent this!

-make sure the jars are squeaky clean
-we always use a probiotic starter (Body Ecology Diet starter, Custom Probiotics #8, or Culturelle)
-make a brine (throw a couple of handfuls of cabbage or celery in the blender with some water, then stir in your probiotic starter or unpasteurized miso paste)
-mix the shredded veggies with the brine very well
-take your time and make sure the veggies are packed down super tight so that there is no extra air in between the veggies
-put a cabbage leaf “lid” on top of the veggies first and then put the rolled up cabbage leaves on top of this (this seems to make a very big difference)
      -put the lid on tight

Hope this helps! I know that there are also a couple of good Utube videos showing how to make this – just skip the salt if they suggest it!
