The Fall version of Kimberly’s Glowing Green Smoothie(R) Recipe

 

Hey Guys!!

Here I am at a glorious farmer’s market in California which inspired this Fall Green Smoothie. I had a few great trips to the farmer’s market this past week, which is definitely one of my favorite pastimes. :) What did I find out in ‘ol Cali???? Um, what didn’t I find?!! To name a few TREASURES I spotted…4 different kinds of Haas avocados, and all for $1 each!! Enough sunflower sprouts that I could swim in them, and the most perfect collard greens, all the exact same size and tied together like a little bundle of flat, green soldiers!! Plus let’s not forget the to die for white nectarines (I’m not embarrassed to admit that I chomped down on the cut up samples, greedy little nectarine-eater that I am!) and heirloom tomatoes from ancient seeds!! Waaay better than a NYC clothes sample sale, in my opinion. :)

What a blessing to meet the people that grow our food, as well as their families. The produce from farmer’s markets is the freshest and the best, and it supports the local farmers. Be sure to check out your local market whenever you have the chance!

In season through the Fall, the extremely powerful dark leafy green kale is the main feature of the Fall Green Smoothie.

Kale is one of the most mineral-rich, beautifying greens there is. It is abundant in calcium, lutein, iron, fiber and essential Vitamins A, K, and collagen-building Vitamin C. Kale has seven times the beta-carotene of broccoli and ten times more lutein. Full of phytochemicals, it also packs in Vitamin E, which rebuilds beautiful skin.

As we switch from season to season our bodies can become more sensitive and it can be easier to get sick. The high content of Vitamin C in kale also helps with immunity, and kale’s naturally rich sulfur content helps boost the body’s detoxification enzymes and provides a great cleansing response in the body to wash the system of toxins.

Dinosaur Kale, also known as Lacinato Kale  (my favorite vegetable in the world!!!)

The Fall version of Kimberly's Glowing Green Smoothie(R) Recipe
 
Makes 4 servings.

Ingredients
  • 1½ cups water
  • 1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
  • 3-4 stalks organic celery
  • 1 bunch Dinosaur or Curly Kale
  • 1 organic apple, cored and chopped
  • 1 organic pear, cored and chopped
  • 1 organic banana
  • Juice of ½ fresh organic lemon
Instructions
  1. Strip the kale leaves (whichever type you are using) off of the stem, discard stems, and blend all the rest of the ingredients until smooth.
  2. Tastes best cold, so be sure to use cold water. If your blender is not very strong, and takes longer to blend up, thereby warming the smoothie, make the night before and keep in the fridge overnight. Keeps for a maximum of up to 3 days in the fridge.

Aim to drink a glass of the Fall Green Smoothie, or regular Green Smoothie, 3-7 times a week to start your day! You will feel energetic, vibrant, and beautiful, just like the mighty kale. :)

  1. I need some help with the smoothie! I love vegetables, I have a pro vitamix, but for some reason I can’t get used to the smoothie. It is really thick and hard to swallow, am I doing something wrong?

    • Hi Sophie,
      I don’t advocate the blood type diet. Every species on the planet- dog, monkey, cat, lion, etc. has an ideal diet based on their anatomic and biological structure. Why should humans be any different? We all have the same digestive tract, organs, etc. There may definitely be foods that are better suited to some based on genetic inheritance/makeup, but I don’t think it can be so broadly divided to be based on blood type.

  6. I love Kale! Love even more the addition to the GGS. Yet, I often heard kale is not good for those with thyroid problems. Just wondering if eating it in this form (raw and blended) would be acceptable for those with thyroid conditions?

    Ive heard great comments from beauty bloggers and im excited to start the smoothies once i get the book :) wish me look I am hoping this will also help me with my constipation and can help me loose weight :)

    • HI Nabi, that’s great. You can get it anywhere on Amazon as well.
      In the Philippines there is a tremendous amount of white rice eaten, which you should cut back on. Also try to cut out pork products as much as possible, and those sweet breads.

  12. I have been trying different green’s in the smoothie ever since I read your book. I have also tried instead of a pear, a medley of pineapple’s, mango’s, peaches and pear’s. It is actualy quite delicious!

    One question, would you recommend adding organic spirilina as well or is that adding too much and I usually add a lot of mint too my smoothie as well because it just makes it taste so powerful and I really enjoy the mintyness :)

    First, let me say that I truly enjoy learning from you. You inspire me to get healthy. If I could rewind the clock about 10 or 15 years, I’d definitely choose your field of study over my stressful corporate career.

    Here’s my deal: I’ve been under an enormous deal of stress for over a 18 months now (depresion, divorce, employment issues, financial strain…) which has had a serious effect on my health though I am only in my 30’s. Here are my current ailments: chronic constipation (can’t afford colonics), dry patchy skin (esp. on my face), signigficant hair loss, dry crunchy hair of what’s left, increasingly worsening acne, inflamed facial skin, weight gain, insomnia, loss of concentration, headaches, dry weak nails, general tiredness and complete lack of energy/motivation…. The list goes on!! I seriously need help!!

    I have tried to start with your green smoothie but unfortunately my depression will invariably kick in and lead me to emotional eating, which I know only backfires my quest to get healthy.

    Aside from appreciating ANY advice on my specific conditions, can you tell me exactly what are the best greens/foods for skin, hair and bone health?? I know we should get a variety, but I want to keep things simple and want to get the biggest bang for my smoothie buck each day.

    I am also primarily concerned about good sources of calcium when choosing not to eat dairy or supplements. I love making the green smoothie with spinach but have read that spinach is a poor source of absorbable calcium and could even have a negative effect on our bone health. Is that true even when we blend it up into a smoothie? Is Kale the best green? What other sources of calcium do you prefer? And what about protein. I know greens do provide the essential amino acids, but I’m afraid I won’t be eating large enough quantities to support my protein requirements.

    It seems the more I read about nutrition, the more confused I get which just frustrates me and leads me to grab whatever is easiest and tastiest.

    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

      Thanks so much for reaching out and emailing me. First off, you should check out my blog, “Calcium Myths Debunked.” There is much information about oxalic acid and absorbability. We actually DO absorb calcium from raw greens, they do not have to be cooked first. Kale, bok choy, spinach, and arugula are all amazing choices…there is so much in your email. It sounds like you need a good kick start to get back on track. If you are interested, I started doing some health consultations over the phone, and that might be a good option for you to talk about your specific issues.     Love the recipe; kale is my favorite! I always buy the regular green kale & the dinosaur kale! :-) Anyways, fall is my FAVORITE season & i love the colors/foods/spices! So I was wondering if you have any pumpkin and/or butternut squash recipes?! I know how wonderful pumpkins are for you (all the vitamin A & C!) so I really want to buy a pumpkin & make use of the whole thing (pulp & seeds). Hope your change of seasons are going well!

  20. Farmer’s markets make me so happy. Sometimes it’s fun to just go and look at all the colors… unfortunately in New England they’re not year-round… so I still have a few more weeks of glory.
    Yes to the kale! There’s a hilarious t-shirt that I have seen that says “eat more kale.” I might just need to find one.
    By the way, I’m mildly amused by the woman(?) in the photo behind you. Random shot of that person…heh…

    I have been following your blog since last year and learnt a lot. I have been making my own variation of the Green Smoothie with leaves that are available to me in Nigeria. I use Ugwu (Pumpkin leaves) telfairi occidentallis to make my green smoothies and recently had to stop because someone suggested that constant (once a day) intake causes abnormal growth of the heart. I have no way of checking to see if this is true. Can you help to confirm? I have been erring on the side of the caution by stopping my green smoothie intake but I miss taking it. Thanks!

      Oh wow, I don’t know anything about Ugwu!! If there is a problem that you have heard of then you should probably stop drinking it until you can investigate it thoroughly. Is there a doctor or center you can talk to in Nigeria? Are there other greens or fruits you can make your smoothie with instead??

  22. Hey Kimberly, I was thinking that maybe you could do a blog on which foods can be eaten raw and which ones cannot. Or maybe you can tell me where I could find this information.

      Sure- that is a good question and there are some foods that are better eaten raw than others… though in general I would say try not to cook your greens at all (spinach, kale, etc.). They are so powerful and full of minerals, vitamins, and enzymes, that you don’t want to tamper with their energy in any way!

  23. I made almost this exact same smoothie this morning (used an apple in place of one of the pears), and I LOVED it! Very very tasty :) Thanks for the nutrition info on kale!!!
